update - it is not wild strawberry

Apparently we have MOCK strawberry, not wild strawberry.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mock_strawberry

This is it exactly!

I also found this:

Mock Strawberries

  • Mock strawberries are a cultivated plant that has naturalized in some woodland areas. The plant has leaves that resemble those of a wild strawberry plant, and has yellow flowers, rather than white. The fruits form in early to midsummer and are bright red with a bumpy appearance. They are dry and bland tasting and are unfit for human consumption, although birds may eat them. This plant may become aggressive when planted in moist, partially shaded soil.

So I guess I am not eating them, but it also seems that they will take over my yard...  now what?
Thanks everyone for the help!!

Re: update - it is not wild strawberry

  • Interesting.  I have never heard of that, so I did a little reading.  From the quick skimming I did (and what you posted), they prefer moist conditions, so first, I wouldn't water that area.  Looks like it's time to start pulling! I would also remove the berries to prevent seeding, although my guess is that getting the roots out is more important. Good luck!

  • LOL I thought about not watering but here in the north east we have been getting a TON of rain - I am doomed!
