Lifefactory prejudice

So today I bought myself a Lifefactory glass water bottle. I know a lot of people on here have them and I was really excited (I've been slowly going green over the last year). So I posted a picture of it on facebook because I take pictures of everything. One of my family members starts tearing into me for "losing my mind" and buying into the green thing which is just making the "green" companies rich and anyway in 15 years they will show that these bottles are just as bad for the environment using technology that we just don't have yet, etc. He was really rude about it.

I didn't ask for anyone's opinion. I was just excited about getting it. And really, it's a water bottle, who gets that upset over how someone else spends their money?

Does anyone else deal with this type of thing? I just don't understand what everyone's problem is. Maybe I just have b!tchy family/friends lol.

  • Yeah, sometimes people (no matter how much we may love them) suck and say dumb things.  Glad you like your water bottle!

  • ha, yep. I actually lost a friend because she couldn't drop the fact that I started doing vermiculture and making my own cleaning products. She'd bring it up in almost every conversation and blather on about how brainwashed I was, how stupid my packed lunches were(compared to her carton of cookies as a "meal"), and any little thing that she possibly could assume was related to my love of sustainable living.  I finally told her to piss off. Most of my choices were related to saving money and creating less waste. They didn't affect her in the slightest but for some reason she got very angry about my decisions. Whatever.

  • Glad to see I'm not alone! I wish people could just mind their own business. Like, I think Family cloth is weird and over the line for me personally, but I would never tell that to someone who chose to use it.

    IDK, people are nuts!

  • That stinks that your "friend" was so rude.  I have never heard of those bottles but looked them up and they are really cool looking!  He's probably jealous that you have such an awesome water bottle!

People are just rude.  I've had multiple family members and friends raise their eyebrows when I mention our compost pile- they assume our backyard smells and that its covered in rodents and bugs.  Some people also think I'm weird for making my own detergents and cleaning supplies...and you should see the looks I get when I talk about cloth diapers.
  • Ugh I'm sorry your "friend" was so rude.  Unfortuantely, people tend to critize things they don't understand.  Your friend perceives the green lifestyle as a threat to his consumerist lifestyle that he doesn't want to change.  So rather than being accepting, he berates you instead.  It's just the symptom of a small mind.  That's what I try to remember when people treat me the same way.  I breathe deeply and think to myself "They're just narrow-minded."

  • Yay for your awesome new water bottle!

I don't understand why some people act like being green or leading a more sustainable lifestyle is a cult-like venture.  I am not going around pushing my way on everyone else all the time, but I am going to stick to what I think is best for my family and the way we treat the environment.  Enjoy your water!!
