When to start Fall Lettuce?

The seed packets say "mid summer" but I know they like cool weather so I don't really get what that means? I just don't wanna wait too long as be too late. Are we taking July or more like August/September?

Re: When to start Fall Lettuce?

  • Look at the seed packet of the lettuce variety you want to plant, and check out the "days to harvest" notation.  You will want to count back from there, considering the fact that the lettuce doesn't like the heat, and also the fact that hard frost won't be good for the plants. either.  And you'll probably also want to start the seeds indoors.

For example, if the lettuce takes 60 days from planting to harvest, you may want to start them indoors at the end of July/ beginning of August, then move them outside by the beginning of September.  However, this is just a guess for me, however... I'm not completely familiar with the exact timing of when to place the lettuce outdoors in your zone.

I think the main thing is that if you start them during mid-summer, you'll want to start them indoors.
