AW: I "won" the diagnostic contest at conference

Right now I'm at the annual conference (FL Arborists). This afternoon I attended a session about diagnosing problems, and the speakers showed us slides and asked us to diagnose what we were looking at. I guessed correctly on most slides, more than anyone else (a lot of people don't play and refuse to guess). Patting myself on the back.

Smile

I didn't recognized salt damage, probably because I don't live in a coastal area and never see it.

I love the Florida chapter. These people are the BEST. Virginia arborists are just NO fun.

That must have been a nice moment.

I'm glad you explained about the salt damage because I didn't have a clue how that could happen. My best guess was road salt and a median strip gone awry.

It does happen like that too, but I knew that's not what I was looking at because... well this was the FL conference after all, and they don't use road salt down there; and further, because the plants weren't near a paved surface where salt would be used.

The shrubs in the slide were kind of crushed to one side and brownish. Turns out they had been near the shoreline and there were three hurricanes that year, so it was storm surge that crushed them, and prolonged submersion in salt water that killed the roots.
