Visiting Norfolk from Omaha

Hi ladies-

My family and I will be in Norfolk for a couple of days at the end of July. I have 3 small children (ages 5, 3 and almost 2) and am looking for some fun things to do with them while there. I would really appreciate any suggestions. The concierge at the hotel told us that Norfolk has a great zoo but I thought I would check here for other ideas. Any info appreciated. TIA.

Re: Visiting Norfolk from Omaha

  • The zoo is a lot of fun and they have a new exhibit with some awesome animals.  They would probably like the Childrens Museum (just across the water in Portsmouth), the Virginia Beach oceanfront (about a 20 minute drive).  The Virginia Aquarium is also in VB which is nice and has a great layout with a park to walk through between buildings.  Other fun stuff could be kite-flying or visiting the playground at Mt. Trashmore.  I think all 3 kids would find something enjoyable at those locations.
  • The Zoo is great! Also in Portsmouth 5 mins from downtown Norfolk the Childrens Museum just re-opened, it's a completley kid interactive play place/ museum. My four year old loves it!. Also there is always the beach, only 20 mins away, in downtown Norfolk (Ghent area) there is pottery painting that is really not very costly, also Nautica is a great place to see it's a giant Navy ship right in the harbor in Norfolk and there is LOTS of family things/exibits to do and see. Williamsburg is only 45 minutes away and the Colonial part is free to walk around and everyone is in period costumes and you can see them making butter and bread, soaps and candles and wooden toys, there are carraige rides, and tours of the battle forts Williamsburg is probably one of the most beautiful places in the world

    Hope this helps!

  • Also check out the Virginia Living Museum in Newport News - they have animals which are native to Virginia, and lots of hands on exhibits. My nieces and nephews love it.
  • I have no other suggestions, but just had to say how adorable your kids are!
  • Hi - My sister and nephews (10y, 3.5y, 6m) just came to visit me. My sister's a 5th grade teacher so we did a lot of history things but here's a few ideas...

    1. Skip the Aquarium. The only cool thing is the seals and you can see those from the parking lot. No need to pay the $30 ticket

    2. I haven't been to the zoo but have heard good things.

    3. I also haven't been but have heard there is a great splash pad at the Botanical Gardens (which is just outside the Norfolk airport)

    4. Go to Chix Beach (free parking at the neighborhoods in the area) or Sandbridge ($5 all day parking). Both are really quiet and not super crowded. Sandbridge also has lots of life guards. The only negative for all beaches (VaBeach included) is that I haven't found public bathrooms in case the little ones have an emergency.  :(

    5. Busch Gardens in Williamsburg (roughly an hour drive) has a Sesame St. area with rides, a splash pad, and pictures with the characters - Elmo, Zoe, etc.

Whatever you do just be sure to bring sunblock, uv shirts and hats. It'll be hot and humid.

    Enjoy your time here!
