my lawn is mostly crabgrass and dandelions --HELP

We just got our not too long ago and the other people did nothing with the yard...

I want to get rid of the weeds and re-seed the lawn.

I really like st. augustine grass.

Is there any advice you ladies can offer me?

I know there is some lawn spray that kills weeds and stuff...but where do I even start???

thanks.

  • In most areas, you are probably too late for re-seeding this spring/summer.  I would wait until fall for the best results.

You can kill the crabgrass and dandelions now, but if it is too hot for new grass to grow you may have bare patches (and depending on the size of your weed problem, you could end up with more bare than covered).

  • We have St. Augustine grass in our front yard and we can't stand it. We ripped it out of the backyard and put Zoysia down. We'll be doing the front yard next year. The St. Augustine grass is very rough and sharp. It doesn't feel soft at all. It's horrible walking on. It needs more water than the Zoysia, we've found. Unless you're really set on the St. Augustine, I'd consider something softer and something that doesn't need as much water.

As far as the weeds go, we use Weed N Feed on our yard and it always works really well. We've never had any trouble with using it.

  • My husband is trying to convert our crabgrass and weed-covered yard to centipede grass.  He planted two large patches this spring and they're doing well.

I love to mess in my garden, but I'm not a "grass" person, so I don't have much advice on cultivating the lawn.  So far, I am liking the centipede though.
