Bleach alternatives

I searched back through the pages and didn't see anything on this. I have never used bleach in my life but my husband does. We have already had multiple 'accidents' and I want to ban it in the house. I think he is open to it if he can have a detergent that whitens just as well.

I highly doubt he will go through the trouble of pre-treating with vinegar or adding it at a certain point in the load so I am hoping you all can recommend something like OxyClean detergent that is easy to use.

What do you use?

Re: Bleach alternatives

  • You don't have to worry about adding the vinegar later--get a downy ball, they pop open in the spin cycle before the rinse.  It adds it for you.  But definitely check into washing soda or borax, it gets your whites white without that chlorox-swimming pool smell.
  • You can also mix hydrogen peroxide with water...not sure of the exact proportions but I know that's an option.
