using bleach bad for environment?

Sorry if this is a stupid question.  I am trying to do things to better our environment but I'm still in the learning process.

We had a plumber come clean our drains that were clogged.  He said the #1 preventative measure in the future would be for us to pour bleach down our drains about once a week or two when we are cleaning.  Is all that bleach horrible to be putting down drains??  I read people use vinegar here for stuff...is that a good alternative for drains?

TIA!

Re: using bleach bad for environment?

  • Chlorine bleach is technically sodium hypochlorite. It's chlorine and salt. When it heats or evaporates, it breaks down into its natural elements. Which are found in nature. All over. It's fine. Before it breaks down it's caustic, but pouring it in your pipes does not cause environmental damage. In fact, bleach is the best way to sanitize.

    Oxygen bleach is sodium percarbonate - basically salt and hydrogen peroxide, which breaks down into salt, water and oxygen.
