Favorite wine?

Ok so me and dh are starting to try different kinds of wines. I am more on the fruity edge (typical) and have no idea where to start! I am interested in the whites, pinks, champagnes. etc. What is your favorite kind or brand?

  • I think the usual progression is: white zin -> chardonnay -> sauvignon blanc/pinot grigio, heh.

I think someone asked this a couple of months ago, if you are bored and feel like digging. (The search feature sucks.)

It came up then, but I'll suggest you try the Cupcake brand of wines. They're not overpriced, and they're decent quality. I also like Yellow Tail for having a cheap wine just to drink on hand.  Personally, I'm not a big white wine fan, but if I had to choose, I'd probably go sauvignon blanc.   I prefer reds - cabernets, chiantis, malbecs, meritage, and shiraz. For brands, Rosemont has decent reds - we had their shiraz at our wedding (it was the best of the not-very-good options our venue had), and their pinot noir is good as well.

If you have a decent wine/liquor store near you, most of them have tastings. Definitely swing by one of those if you have no idea what you're looking for.   And maybe try the blends to start - the Yellow Tail Cabernet-Shiraz is pretty good.

  • Another vote for Yellow Tail as my favorite cheap wine.  I'm not much of a white wine person- I always drink red.  My favorite sparkling though is Prosecco.

I may be the only person here who thinks Yellowtail is awful Indifferent

I LOVE the Thirty Bench Ros?, but I assume Canadian wines are pretty hard to find in the US.

One of the best Rieslings I have had is by Dr. L (German).  I also love Gewurtztraminer.

And, I love Veuve Clicquot champagne, but don't get to spend that much very often Big Smile

  • Cupcake's Sauvignon Blanc is my favorite.  It's a New Zealand wine, so look for it in that section.  I also like Yellow Tail's Riesling.

ETA - You have to be really careful with Chardonnay.  Some have a strong oak flavor which some people like, but I personally don't, and doubt you would either until you have tried more wines.

This is a great thread for me right now since I'm trying to make the switch from beer to wine.  I've always loved beer but lately even the smell of it is grossing me out so I'm going to start exploring different types of wines.

My go-to favorites are Blue Moon Riesling by Bridgeview which I think is semi sweet, and then I also really like White Zin by Sutter Home.  Both kinds are under $10 per bottle, woohoo!

  • For red's, I prefer Cabernet Sauvignon, although I originally started on red with Pinot Nior, then transitioned to Shiraz and Merlot, but I've found my niche with Cab. I don't really like dry wines.

For wine, I like rieslings.  I don't drink wine with meals (typically) so I prefer a sweeter white as kind of a "treat"/dessert.  I also like moscato's.

As for brands, I don't have any specifics.  Honestly we just try new cheap wines btwn Trader Joes and Binny's Beverage Depots (ugh which I thought was national but just looked and it's regional; either way, it's amazing! Haha, both my dad and sister separately requested to go there to stock up on wine the last time they were in town), if you have either.  They're not always "good" wines, but they do have bottles priced starting at $3.99

  • If you have a Trader Joe's anywhere nearby, definitely try the Charles Shaw brand (aka two/three buck chuck). I personally like reds over whites, with my favorite type of red being Pinot Noir.

Yellowtail is okay, especially for the price. For white zinfandel, I like the Beringer brand.

But my absolute favorite drink is sangria, specifically this brand (which I found at Target):

  • I am not a huge wine drinker but my SIL is..... :-) Anyways last time we were in CO she brought out some new wine that she was trying and I have to say that I loved it. I loved it so much I even took a picture of it so I would remember it..lol

I think what I liked about it was that it wasnt over powering and the labels are totally adorable as well. Stick out tongue

  • Allie, I've always wondered if that stuff is good!  I may have to try now.  My dad just sent me his sangria recipe (which he claims to have spent two summers perfecting, lol).  I'm anixous to try it:

It is a big batch so I can enjoy it all week. (You could cut it in half)
    Here is ingredient list:

    Two bottles red wine -
One bottle sparking cider - 25.4 oz.
One can san pelligrino aranciata (orangata)  11.5 oz.
Two bottles san pelligrino limonata - 6.7 oz. each
Half bottle brandy - about 1 cup
Two limes - chopped small pieces
One orange - chopped medium pieces
One granny smith apple - chopped medium pieces
About 2/3 cup sugar ( may add more - need to taste it chilled)

You really don't need to use the sparkling apple cider, I just believe it helps the muddling process due to the fizz

  • I don't like anything dry so I am a reisling, moscatto and fruit wine kinda girl. I did find a winery in Missouri on our way home from the Ozarks last year that I loved every.single.bottle! Good for them not good for my wallet! Here is the link: http://www.adampuchtawine.com/ The JazzBerry is delish!

We also have a local winery http://www.lavendercrest.com/ that is really good. I love the Beaches, it is a peach wine. YUMMY!

  • my favorites are ice wines followed by late harvest and then just fruit wines...I tend to go more with local wineries and less national though so my individual brands wouldn't help unless you are in central PA or Northern MD

That recipe sounds amazing! I really do recommend that particular brand of sangria, though. I've tried a bunch of the others and found them revolting. This one has a really nice, light fruity flavor and packs a punch after about 1.5 glasses.

  • i'm a little late to this party! but what the heck I love me some wine!!

I really like Fetzer brand Gewurztraminer its a sweet white!

I'm more of a cab drinker, love the shutter home brand and as well as one i found at total wine and more. it's Mendoza station cab. it's very yummy! also the safeway here has one called liberty creek that's like 5.00 for a 1.5lt bottle which goes down pretty smooth, it's what we've been getting.

as for white zines i like the the shutter home brand as well as tisdale white zine.

I haven't found a chardonnay that i like i tend to find them more of a dry/ oak flavored then i like.

I had a bottle of yellow tail cab. and thought it wasn't that great...for 8.00 bucks I think not.
