Ideas For First Visit to San Francisco Area
Hi All!
I'm visiting from the DC board and hope you all can give me some advice
My husband and I would like to take a trip to the San Francisco area in late July/August for about 5 nights/6 days, but have no clue what all we should do once we get there. We like the beach, hiking, and touristy things. We're not big wine drinkers. We're ok with renting a car (If I can do DC traffic can I do traffic there?) if we need to. Any recommendations for things we should do as first timers would be great. Thanks!
Re: Ideas For First Visit to San Francisco Area
Go find a post by MsBlake on Money Matters and check out her blog (linked in her siggy).
Don't get a car if you're primarily planning on staying in San Francisco proper; totally not necessary. If you want to venture farther out though (like 45 mins. north to the redwoods at Muir Woods or a couple of hours south to the Monterey Bay Aquarium), then yes a car is needed.
NorCal is not a beach area so I wouldn't count on doing that.
These first few things are all within the same area
Fisherman's Wharf - the epitome of tourist area. There are some fun sea lions you can see by the pier though.
Alcatraz - very cool tour, get tickets online well advance. Ferry leaves from the Fisherman's wharf area.
Golden Gate Bridge - you can walk, bike, or drive across the bridge and go up to the Marin Headlands for a great photo op. Otherwise, there are lots of areas in the city from which you can just take a look at it.
Lombard Street - aka crookedest street in the world.
Ghiradelli Square - a few blocks from Lombard St., great ice cream.
Shopping
Union Square - a lot of big chain stores and upscale retailers.
Union Street - different from the above, it's more boutiquey and cute.
Museums
MOMA
Asian Art Museum
de Young Museum
Academy of Arts & Sciences
Other
Golden Gate Park - de Young Museum, Japanese Flower Garden, Conservatory of Flowers, and the bison pen are all here.
Muir Woods - beautiful forest and lots of trails to hike/walk.
There might be some street fairs going on while you're in town.
Walking tour of Chinatown
There are free concerts at Stern Grove during the summer
Hope that helps some; have a great trip!
Not much to add to what Rock-N-Voll said, but I went on the SF Vampire Tour and it was a lot of fun and interesting too. You learn a lot of SF history.
