Looking while employed

How do you handle looking for a job while you're currently employed? My current company doesn't know that I'm looking. Do I just risk them finding out by applying other places?

Some of the positions I am looking at are within the same career field.

Re: Looking while employed

  • I'm not sure of your question. Do you think the other places are going to tell your current company that you have applied or interviewed there? The only time they should be contacting your current company is if they make you an offer and want to check your references.

I would do certain things to not be obvious, like keeping your monster resume private and not stating on linkedin.com that you're actively looking. And I wouldn't use company time, computer, or fax resources to apply or send resumes.

But a majority of people are looking while being employed and their company never knows.

Yes, this is my concern. The field I am in isn't very large and I am afraid that someone would contact my current employer and let them know I'm looking.

I've never had to worry about this before, which is why I asked. Any other time I've been looking for work it was due to relocating and my current employers were aware of my move.

Companies don't automatically contact your current employer when you apply for jobs. Unless/until you need to schedule interviews, you don't need to worry. Often there's a question on the application asking if they can contact your current employer. You can tell them not unless they are ready to make an offer.

  • This is me!! I am extremely worried about this. The "community" I work in is very close and everyone knows someone who knows everyone kind-of-thing. All it takes is a random run-in and a "oh, I saw hopefullysoon's resume the other day, i thought she was still working for you...." and I'm outted like that. I feel you on this one!

Most companies have  the good sense not to blab.

Do not use resources from your current employer to search or contact potential employers.  Don't even use the computer on your desk to check your own private e-mail.  Never access a job search data base etc.  Walk outside the building & get in your car to make phone calls.

Basically all of this. I am in the same position. But, I don't care if they find out.
