Oklahoma Plants Question

So I am killing things like crazy here---especially potted plants. I can't even get my lantana to bloom. How often do you guys water your potted plants? I do a heavy watering once a day (in the evenings) but I wonder if I should be watering twice a day. Help!!!

Re: Oklahoma Plants Question

  • I water potted plants when the soil feels dry. I try to keep the ferns from getting dry, as they like to be a little wetter than the others. It's kind of a crapshoot with this heat--the plants haven't had the opportunity to get used to the heat like they normally do. My in-ground plants aren't looking too hot, either. It's not you!

  • Agreed... My flower bed was looking amazing a few weeks ago, but now it's very wilt-y. I water once a day, too. I think twice a day is too much of a commitment. They're just going to have to toughen up.
  • I'm considering cutting my losses and cutting my yellowed nasturtiums to the dirt and see if maybe they'll harden off and toughen up to the Oklahoma summer. A lot of what I have looks fine, still, especially my rose moss and crepe myrtles, but they love love love the heat.

  • I have rose moss too! It's growing like crazy. My snap dragons aren't looking so great.
  • Your snapdragons won't make it. They're lovely in the spring but they can't handle our heat :( At least, I've never had any luck with them.

  • I water my potted plants once a day, usually in the mornings. There's really not much you can do unless you only use plants that just love HOT HOT summers.  I do feel it's better to water early in the mornings rather than the evenings to help avoid any kind of mold or fungus that can grow on the plant. I also use mulch on my potted plants to help keep moisture in and weeds out. And of course, I fertilize about once a month or so since we're watering so frequently.

Don't feel bad... my lantanas aren't do much either!

I like the "toughen up" line. It has me LOLing.

    Man up, ya wee bast@rds!

  • We just had some knockout roses planted that are doing okay. We water them daily... our Hibiscus is struggling but doing okay as well.

Our goal was to get plants that did well in the heat. So far they appear to be maintaining.
