Moving out to the burbs (Chandler)

We are buying a house near Germann & Dobson and should be closing in early July.  We wanted to buy in a family friendly area, but don't have kids yet.  If you live near this area, I was wondering what your favorite (preferably non-chain) restaurants are, or if you have any good date night ideas close by.  We've been renting near Old Town Scottsdale for the last few years, so we haven't spent many evenings in our new neighborhood.  I think we'll need a few nights away from home/yard work!  :)

 Thanks!

Re: Moving out to the burbs (Chandler)

  • I don't know too much for non-chain food places, DH doesn't tend to like exploring food options at all, and I still don't know too many people in the area, but I wanted to say congratulations on the house!   That's about the area that we've been looking around for a house too, but we already live in the area (S. Gilbert and 202).  We both love it here.

  • We havent really ventured out for the restuarants yet, but we live near Dobson & Ocotillo and are LOVING the area!! Hope you enjoy it too!

  • Howdy neighbor!

We live at Dobson and Pecos, so really close to where you'll be. We love the area. Close to everything. As far as restaurants go, we are guilty of eating at mostly chain restaurants. Our favorites are Grimaldi's (Alma School and Queen Creek), and most of the places around the mall.

I think that you'll be really happy with the area. Welcome!

Hey we are so close! We really should plan a play date for our little guys!

  • i guess they moved...because when we lived in chandler they were in a different location. but rigatony's authentic italian is really good and i remember the portions being really big. looks like they're off warner and mclintock now.

dilly's deli is out your way too...i'm pretty sure off alma school and germann and it's one of my favorite sandwich places. it's delicious! not really a date place, but everybody should have their blazing buffalo sandwich once in their life.

  • We're at Gilbert and Riggs, but moving to Gilbert and Pecos soon.  I love this area!  Some of our favorite non-chain places include BLD and Uncle Bears at Germann & Dobson (I've heard Rancho De Tia Rosa is good but we haven't been yet), Barro's pizza (a local chain) at Germann & Alma School, Dilly's Deli and Keegan's at Alma School & Queen Creek, Chino Bandito at Dobson & Chandler and The Living Room wine bar at Queen Creek & Dobson.  Our go-to date night location is usually Old Town Chandler- Sushi Eye (the best sushi in AZ in my opinion), San Tan Brewery (think 4 Peak- the owners used to work there) and El Zocalo (cutest little patio in the back) are all great options.  There are a few more there, but we haven't tried them yet.

If you want to drive a little further (like 15 minutes) there are some great options in Gilbert- Joe's Farm Grill, Joe's Real BBQ, Liberty Market, Flancer's Cafe.

That's all I can think of right now, but there's also a ton of nicer chain restaurants (like Kona, Cheesecake Factory, California Pizza Kitchen, etc.) between Chandler Mall and San Tan Mall.

  • You're moving to my neighborhood! We're closer to QC/Alma, but if you exit our subdivision through the back it spits you out at that intersection. Are you getting one of the new builds right at that intersection?

There is a great restaurant at Dobson/Germann called BLD. It just opened a couple of months ago. The food is fantastic,  but the last time we went they were still working out some kinks. I have high hopes that the place is going to be really phenom soon.

Stay FAR FAR away from Casa Tia Rosa or whatever the Mexican place is called that is in the same strip mall. The food is beyond horrible. To give you an idea of how bad it is, they put sugar in the salsa. It is sweet like jelly and utterly disgusting.

Downtown Chandler has some good restaurants. We like Serranos Mexican Food, and LOVE Paletas Betty. I have heard nothing but great things about Urban Tea Loft and Kokopelli Winery. The Better Than Sex Cake Cafe makes amazing cakes, but I'm not sure if they are still around - and they have a little restaurant but I've never gotten anything but cake from them.

At Alma/Ocotillo there are a few restaurants that are supposed to be great, but we haven't been to. Cork and a few others that I can't remember the names of.

  • We live in South Gilbert and try and get out to different non-chain type places.

A lot of places in pp are definitely good choices, but I would have to disagree with Tia Rosa. I actually love that place. To be fair, I've only had the crab tacos and margaritas, but I loved both.

Sushi-Eye is amazing, but there is a new place called Otaku. It's off of Gilbert between Germann and Queen Creek that we tried for Valentine's day and will be going back this weekend...very good sushi and other dishes.

Chito Bandito (Chinese/Mexican) off of Dobson and Chandler Blvd (behind the Walgreens) isn't a date spot but for lunches is a great choice. I know the combo sounds weird but it's really good. If you have never been, they will give you a tasting before ordering. I recommend the chile relleno (sp?) as a quesidilla....yummy!

Does anyone know of a good Thai place in Chandler/Gilbert?

  • Thanks for all of the great ideas.  We love, love, love sushi!  I'm so glad to get some good sushi recommendations.  DH loves Mexican, and I just love almost any food that isn't cooked by me.  I'm definitely looking forward to moving out to the area!  Now I have to start thinking about how to decorate.  :)

  • I've lived her for over ten years, and I had no idea Chandler was considered the burbs.  Good to know.

  • Wow, I had no idea so many nesties lived by me! H and I are at Gilbert and Ray. Some of our fav places are in downtown Chandler. They are revamping a lot in that area and are trying to make it more appealing to a younger crowd I feel. San Tan Brewery is great, Coach and Willies just opened, Murphy's Law is a lot of fun & Kokopelli Winery is really nice.

Old Town Gilbert has so much to offer as well! Liberty Market is amazing! Oreganos, Joe's BBQ and a few other restaurants are around there as well.

There is also Iguana Mack's and Dos Gringos on Alma School/ Knox I believe.

Another place we discovered about a year or so ago(because it had just opened) is Jimmy's of Chicago on Gilbert and Pecos. Delicious Italian!!!

  • DH and I are in East Mesa, Power and Southern.

Like a lot of the other nesties posted, Old Town Gilbert has a ton to offer. There is even a wonderful Farmer's Market there on Saturdays. They are new so they are still growing but we love to head down there and check out all of the yummy foods.

Our other fave is Old Town or Dowtown Chandler. It is off of Arizona Ave. (Country Club) and just south of Chandler Blvd. If you turn west on Boston (small street w/ a light just south of Chandler Blvd.) there is a ton down there. Our favoritye for datye night is the winery Kokopelli's. It is delish! Great food, great atmosphere, and great wine! We even held our rehearsal dinner there. They have a lot of restaurants and bars down there and they hold a farmer's market there on I believe Thursday or Friday afternoons.

    Good luck!

I agree with Kokopelli!   Actually, I had my bridal shower there too.  =)

  • Welcome to the neighborhood!  There are so many good restaurants around this area!  Just at Germann and Dobson:  We love BLD, we're on our 3rd punch card at YoLove (self-serve fro-yo), and we've been to Oregano's and Uncle Bear's more than a few times.  DC Steakhouse, La Stalla, and Sushi Eye are our favorites in downtown Chandler.  DC and La Stalla (Italian) each have great happy hours.  Murphy's Law Irish Pub and El Zocalo definitely deserve a mention--El Z has great margaritas!  At Dobson and Queen Creek you'll find The Living Room wine bar and Sauce.

When the weather finally cools down again, downtown Chandler has its art walk on the 3rd Friday each month and the farmer's market every Thursday from 3-7.

Oops, I almost forgot Serrano's in downtown Chandler.  A family-owned Mexican restaurant that's been around for years.  Oh, and Brunchies is right by it--it's not fancy, but it does have a good breakfast menu.  Coach and Willie's recently opened next to Brunchies--haven't tried it yet but I've heard it's a cool sports bar with good food.

Does anyone know of a good Thai place in Chandler/Gilbert?

Latitude 8 in downtown Chandler (on Arizona Ave.) is supposed to be fabulous.  I'm not a huge fan of Thai, so I've never tried it.

  • blue wasabi is a good sushi place near by! if you're looking for a good date night area - germainn and gilbert has a ton of restaurants both sitdown and quick service as well as the movie theater and an entire shopping area.

kokopelli winery is also supposed to be really nice and san tan brewery is great also if you like to support local beer and food! and of course, chandler and the 101 has the chandler fashion square which has chain restaurants but is still good!
