giving notice

I accepted an offer for a GREAT new job today (yay!!) but am really nervous about giving my notice. My boss is currently out of the office and I won't see him until Tuesday, so I need to do it over the phone tomorrow.

I have expressed my concerns with my current job satisfaction but didn't tell anyone I've been looking, so I don't think this will come as a big surprise but I'm getting myself all worked up. We have recently had a lot of turnover in the department (and the company as a whole for that matter), with the person leaving being made out by management to be the bad guy so I'm a bit concerned about what will be said about me behind my back and to my face in the next two weeks.

Tell me your worst and/or best experience giving notice and help calm my fears!

Re: giving notice

  • Is there any way to push back your start date so you can give notice face to face?

If you absolutely have to tomorrow, just tell him you accepted an offer you couldn't refuse and you'll have a resignation letter available to give to HR. You don't really need to say anything else.

To be frank, I wouldn't care who said what over the next 2 weeks. You're leaving. My only concern would be that your boss may ask you to leave when you give your notice. I've heard of that happening.

For the most part, the anticipation is worse than the actual resignation.

I am HR. Stick out tongue

I thought about waiting until Tuesday, but I am really ready to move on and just want to get this over with. Last time I quit a job I probably only slept two hours the night before I was so nervous about telling my boss. Plus I'd like to give them as much time as possible to find a replacement. I am totally fine with being asked to leave once I give notice, although I don't think it's likely.

  • I always get very nervous about this!  Most experiences have been extremely positive -- my boss' recognized that I was leaving for a better/different opportunity and were happy for me. Life will go on without you there and they know that.

I had one bad experience. I was in a job for 1 1/2 yrs and basically put in a position for the last 6 months to fail. I quickly found another job so I could get out of there -- pronto.  Everyone knew the project we were working on was sinking so I bailed early. Didn't stay around to fix it or take the fall (the issues were NOT my fault). I had to tell my supervisor who basically threw in my face that I had committed to stay. He asked me to leave that day.  Ouch. Not one single regret though.

IMO this is not a good enough reason to do it over the phone. It's much more professional to do it face to face, and if you can wait until Tuesday from a timing perspective, I'd do it.
