Totally random thoughs: I think handshakes are so interesting.

I don't like it when a man gives me a light whimpy "you're a woman" handshake.  I purposely give a good confident squeeze back to say, "see I can take it".

Totally random thoughs: I think handshakes are so interesting.  There are so many tiny deviations to the way people shake hands, and oftentimes they can tell you a lot about a person.  Case in point:

I just saw someone who I once interned for but whom I haven't seen since 2004.  We shook hands.  He gave me the ol' two-handed handshake and continued to hold onto my hand with both hands as he made small talk.  Meanwhile I was thinking, "Dude, let go!  Give me my hand back!".

What do I think that says about him?  He thinks he's a politician, a schmoozer, and a charmer.

What do I think that says about me?  I have a problem with people in my bubble and don't like intimacy (or at least not with long-lost bosses).

Ha - interesting!  I bet there's a chart out there or something that can interpret handshakes.

I remember very specifically my father teaching me that I needed to have a firm handshake when I met people, interviewed for a job, etc. so I always tend to give a pretty good squeeze.

    My thoughts on handshakes:

I sort of feel like handshakes are B.S.  Who decided that a firm, just the right length, handshake means the shaker is a good business person/professional/whatever.

Also, the "right" kind of handshake can easily be learned.  So why doesn't everyone just do it the right way?

I also have personal space issues, particularly with work folks.

I can't believe we made it to 4 pages!  I don't remember the last time this has happened!

D&M, congrats on the loss.  I wonder how much you 3 zillion stones weighed. ;)

I'm guessing about 6 lbs.  lol.

And it's not even 3:00 yet!

BTW, Molly Jones, I'm with you in the dragging camp.

  • We're going to hit 100.  That is quite the milestone.  Seems like it's been years since we did that.  Haha.
  • I'm hungry and thinking about hitting up the vending machine.  Ha.
  • Kasa, another time for lunch?

We put a hummingbird feeder up a week ago.  No hummingbirds.  I've never seen one in our yard.  But maybe we'll be surpirsed.  Willa's stares at it, hoping she'll catch one.  Literally.  She has a net ready just in case.

Did anyone else see (hee hee, this makes me feel like my grandma) the hummingbird show on PBS?  It was incredible!!  I learned so much about them.  Did you know their wings flap in a figure 8 pattern?  And that on some tropical island a breed of hummingbird has different male and female beaks to keep up with the evolution of flowers on the island?  Amazing.

So thankful for the randoms post.  Where else would I put this? ;)

Today isn't dragging so much as I feel really tired.  I don't normally have an afternoon cup of coffee, but I think I want one today.

The main thing that gets me by when work is slow (besides TN) is trip planning - so that's helping to make my day go by!

So at our "Preparing for Childbirth and Labor" class tonight, it's all about newborn care.  I will totally admit, I'm a little nervous.  I'm afraid I'll drop the doll when changing it's diaper or something.  I've only changed like...5 diapers in my whole life.  3 of those have at least been in the last 2 years.

    Kasa, another time for lunch?

For sure!  I'm available most days.

I did not see the hummingbird show on PBS.  Although, I vaguely remember B telling me about something that he watched about hummingbirds, so maybe that was it?

  • This day is flying for me.  A happening randoms post helps.  As does the work I'm doing today.

The randoms are wonderful for this.  Where else would I ask about farts?

BTW, I discussed with Andy my Q about farting caveman.  It somehow led to the question of does President Obama fart audibly in front of people and then laugh.  And the image of that in my head made me laugh.

Sorry, I'll stop talking about gas in here someday, I promise.

Oh, noooooooooo.  I don't want that picture in my head!  It will ruin the aura.

Juli, as amusing as you find gas, you would be laughing constantly in my office.  The guys that work here are not at all shy about audibly farting.  Did I ever mention the in-office, during work hours farting competition that happened here a few months ago?

It would be funnier if it wasn't where I work.  And funnier still if my boss weren't involved.

  • My "I feel like a grandma" moments for this week:

Last night I fell asleep (in my bed) at 8:00 p.m. (In my defense, I slept really badly in a hotel on Tuesday night and was short on sleep).

Today I made dinner reservations for 5:30 tomorrow.  For the early bird special.  (In my defense, it's a really smoking good deal that involves a bottle of wine!).

     oooh do share!

We were just downtown at a rally that supports marital rights equality.  It was so fun and there were a lot of supportive passers-by.

Love that you took the time to support the cause. Even better that you took the kids. What a great experience for them. You are such a good mom!

  • I'll gladly share!  And it's a locally owned place, too!

Arboreal Inn--It's in Ferrysburg, on Grand Haven Rd.

The special is $27.95 for two small entrees (I find they are the right size, but probably half the size of typical restaurant entrees) with one side, chocie of soup or salad for each diner, and either a bottle of house wine or dessert to share.  The desserts are nothing special here (and only $6 compared to $18 for the wine).  The special runs M-F from 5-6.  The wine is pretty cheap, our merlot last time was Gato Negro, but the food is good and we aren't too picky about wine, particularly at that price.

I was nervous too, but honestly you will pick it up SO fast.  (And then you will feel like you forgot again once they are not a newborn anymore...haha)

  • Holy guacamole! This thread is long! I tried to catch up, but I can't. I read all the Boner Weiner stuff and giggled :)

In my news, today I am thankful for Mickey Mouse Clubhouse as that is keeping Mere amused while I work on a RIDICULOUS PowerPoint for one of my Master's classes. I hate the professor. She's unorganized and does NOT return emails, which in and of itself is a problem being that the class is ONLINE. Two more assignments and I'm done.

I'm curious as to which restaurant you are talking about.  Maybe PM me?  Is it around here?

Ha, no need for the PM.  :)

Do you have a restaurant.com coupon too?  Hehe.

  • yay! I always love trying new places, and that sounds great. We're not super picky about wine either. I mean, I appreciate a good one, but unless it's a special occasion I'm totally fine with good ol' Yellow Tail or Rite Aid special.

    How annoying.

On another note, at what age do kids start paying attention to the TV?  T is not interested, at all.

  • I love our new vending machines.  I got an orange.  Yay for fresh fruit.
