How long to expect for background check?

I was verbally offered a great position on Tuesday, pending the background/criminal/credit check, and a reference check.  I've heard from all of my references that they were called.  

 I will not receive the written offer until the background check comes back, I faxed them the permission form on Wednesday morning.  Any idea how long it will take?  I'm curious, and antsy.    A few days?  Over a week?

Assuming everyone is doing their jobs efficiently, it shouldn't take more than a day.  I can't imagine that you wouldn't know today or tomorrow.

When I run background checks, I usually have results back within a few hours. 

That being said, if there is anything that comes up on the background check, we will investigate it.  That can take a few days.

I work for a major telecommunications co. 5-7 business is the norm.

I had some overseas education and it took them 4 weeks to verify everything and send me an offer letter!

I ran one recently for a new hire. Half of it was immediately available and it took another day or two for the second half of information to come back. Plus factor in time for the hiring person to review it and write up your offer letter, so maybe another day depending on their other tasks at the moment.

Mine too over a week to come back. Even though I got the offer, they wouldn't set a start date until the checks came back.
