Headaches?

I've been getting a lot of mild headaches lately, maybe 3 or so a week, over the last month or so. I usually only get them now and then. At first I attributed it to the weather because we had some cool rainy weather, then it suddenly got hot, etc and they were coming in the afternoon so I thought it could be sinus stuff.

But this week I had a headache when I woke up Monday that went away. Tuesday afternoon I had to take Advil for one. And I woke up with one today that went away but is coming back.

I'm just not sure if it is something I should follow up with my doctor about.

Have you gone off or on hormonal BC lately?

    Are you drinking enough water?

    Are you getting enough sleep?

    Are you eating differently?

    Are you more stressed?

These are all things that affect my headaches. I get migraines, though, so headaches are a part of my life. If this is something totally unusual for you, I don't think it would hurt to consult a doctor. I imagine he would ask you many of these types of questions, though, and ask you to keep a headache journal (write down what you eat and drink, how you feel, etc. when you have a headache).

I get headaches when there is a big swing in the weather patterns. It's a certain type of headache, though. I'm like my own radar system.

    This!

If you can't think of anything that has really changed enough to cause the headaches, I would see your dr. as they can be cause by other things like your blood pressure.

  • Holly, have you had your eyes checked recently?

Also, do you take anything for allergies? I know we have had a REALLY bad year for pollen here in MA due to the weather and for me sometimes the main allergy symptom is actually a dull throbby type of headache. Remember that even if you've never had allergies before it is something that can sort of randomly start (and it is real common for them to show up in your 20s!).

If you haven't tried it, give the generic Zyrtec a shot - it works SO well for me, and lots of people that I know. I have never had any side effects from it (maybe just a bit drying so drink extra water).

It could also be environmental allergies related to the construction in your house...and didn't you move to a new lab recently? could be something there.

Another thought if you're waking up with the headaches it could be time for a new pillow! sometimes neck strain can show up as a headache.

Headaches are so frustrating, and often hard for docs to diagnose and treat anyway. Also know that treating them sometimes causes rebound headaches to come back when the meds wear off and that can feel worse than the original headache.

    All great points.

DH's seasonal allergies didn't show up until he was 26 or 27. Now, they are worse than mine (he is 30) and mine are pretty bad.

I second trying some Zyrtec or Claritin. Zyrtec doesn't work for me, but Claritin does. The opposite is true for DH. I think Allegra is over the counter now, too. Also, if you think you might have sinus problems (which may be the case, even if you aren't stuffed up.. mine manifests itself sometimes in headaches in the back of my head) you might try some Sudafed (get the kind with psuedophedrine) or any of the allergy medicines with the D after it.

  • Nothing has really changed, except the construction in the basement. My lab moved 6 months ago, so I don't think it is that. But it could be from the drywall mud/sanding and paint. Come to think about it paint usually does give me headaches and we started painting Sunday, so that could be a contributor to this week's headaches.

I've never had allergies, but before this week my headaches were usually around my eyes or right between them. That made me wonder if it was a sinus thing with all the changing weather.

As far as taking allergy medication, when should I take it? I never know when these headaches will strike up (before this week they usually came on the afternoon). Will it do much taking it after the headache had already started?

Oh, and we got new pillows a couple months ago.

My Doctor had me taking a Zyrtec or a Claritin D once every morning.

ETA: I liked the Zyrtec better than the Claritin D (I noticed a bigger difference in my allergies).

  • zyrtec is supposed to be non-drowsy, I always take it in the AM when I take it. I have found that if I have an allergy headache (which is often where you describe, between the eyes like, and often below my eyes too, all sinus) and I take a zyrtec it does help relieve symptoms.

If you're worried about how it might affect you, take one on Sat morning when you get up and see if you feel better or have any issues. that way at least you're not going to work, etc.

According to my doc, regular plain claritin is a waste - recent studies showed it is like only .1% more effective than a sugar pill. Claritin D might be more effective. But I'd put my money on Zyrtec.

And be sure you air things out while painting/sanding, that could be causing allergies.

And for serious, I never had allergies until about the last four years or so. It is super common to develop them later on, and like I said it has been a BAD season for them in our area.

FYI brandname Zyrtec makes me fall asleep... generic zyrtec works great. I took Allegra for over 10 years until insurance stopped paying for it but that worked best for me.

You could also try a sinus rinse and see if that helps (it will just clean you out). I use the medirinse bottle (vs netipot).

I'd assume this is sinus. Did you feel pressure increase when you bent down? That's a definite sign on sinus congestion. Allergy medicine probably won't help with it, unless you take it regularly, because it just prevents your system from releasing histamines. It won't clear up existing congestion. To clear it up, you need a decongestant. So, Sudafed or Mucinex D. Something with pseudophedrine.

Funny, the discussion about Claritin. It works for me. Zyrtec doesn't do a darn thing. I always take it at night though because my allergies are worse in the morning and it works better if it's already in your system. It doesn't keep me up unless I take the Claritin-D, which has pseudophedrine in it.
