Why is it so much harder to eat well when DH is away?

It should be easier right? Not having to worry about or plan for anyone but you...

C is down in Tokyo for work until tomorrow night, so I could use this opportunity to try making some super healthy recipe I've always wanted to try that I've never made because I know he wouldn't like it. Instead, I have the urge to bake myself cupcakes and eat pizza and lucky charms and drink wine in front of the TV tonight. If I hadn't already binged on 27 WW points worth of pound cake earlier this week, I'd give in.

What do you eat when you're solo?

Re: Why is it so much harder to eat well when DH is away?

  • Huz works at night, so somtimes I survive on quesadillas, cereal and pb&j. It's nice not to have to cook (Huz likes "real meals" and I could live off of cereal). I admit, my eating is not the best when he's not around either. Weird huh? Maybe surf the web or watch a cooking show for some inspiration? Or go to Pinterest! There's always something I'm dying to make from there! =)

Haha, I've been trying to AVOID pinterest today... it fills my head with visions of gooey cinnamon rolls and ice cream cones and chocolate-covered anything that I'm doing everything in my power to resist! It's a dangerous place. :)

  • Well, let's see...T is doing a solo Costco run tonight and I'm on my own for dinner before going to a girl's night out and so far I've had a Jack in the Box oreo milkshake and a rice krispie square for dinner.  And, I'll probably have a bowl of cereal before I go to GNO.  (I do feel I should mention that I had a reeeeeally healthy breakfast/lunch day otherwise Stick out tongue)

So yeah...I hear ya.  I don't know...maybe it's that when there's another person you feel like you should make a "sensible" or "grown up" meal but when it's just you, you realize how much easier it is to just forage?

  • Often I'll have a bagel and cream cheese as a meal.. which my husband claims is not a meal, so thats why I do it when he is gone :) That or bread and cheese with wine.. lol
  • When DH isn't here, I find myself not cooking a meal because A) I can "get away" with not cooking, since it's just me. And B) It seems like so much work to go through for just one person (even though it's really not).

So I usually make something super quick and easy, like scrambled eggs or a quesadilla, or eat something that requires zero cooking like a bowl of cereal or crackers and cheese with fruit or something.

Ditto this. I also feel like there's kind of a "Home Alone" movie aspect to it. Nobody else is home, so it's "safe" to sleep in a little, or watch your favorite shows, or leave the laundry for tomorrow, or indulge in a bigger slice of dessert. It's fun to veer from the routine a little and get away with doing or not doing something when you're home alone.
