poll: realistic dream job?

I'm feeling very blah about my job. If had to give the truthful answer, I've been pretty blah about it for the whole 4 years I've worked here. I'm feeling like I need a real change, but I can't for the life of me think of what would really make me happy.

Do you have a realistic dream job you're trying to get to?

Re: poll: realistic dream job?

  • To be honest, I do have my dream job. I spent an additional 2 years getting a second BA and then went for my Masters so that I could have a job that I knew I was going to enjoy. I'm a speech language pathologist and one of the best thing about my job is that I have so many options within my field. Maybe you need to take one of those career inventory things to see what comes up as a possibility?

  • hahaha, well in dream land, I would not work at all.

But, I wish I would have been a nutritionist. It interests me infinitely more than what I am doing now.

  • My job now is very close to my dream job, I just wish they would give me more responsiblity

  • I love what I do now (middle school teacher and grade level coordinator), but I am working on my administration certification to become an assistant principal. I would like to teach high school for a year or two before that.

  • I really enjoy what I do. Right now it's a little stressful, learning new systems, but overall  I love working at a  University with the students. Like Remy said, in a perfect world I would not work...maybe part time.

  • I'm kind of in a weird place right now. I have an MA. I was working as a research assistant and wanted more responsibility (and was getting really frustrated with some people I worked with), but there is no career advancement for research assistants here. A position opened up here to do work directly for the executive director. It was sold as doing a lot of business development, relationship building, policy research. What I do is act as a second admin/exec assistant for them. I've talked to my two bosses about this and there appears to be no way to get my job to be what it was supposed to be. They "didn't know what they needed when they wrote the job description and now I'm doing what they need". I specifically told them in the interview that if they wanted and exec assistant, I wasn't the person for the job.

I really miss being a part of research. I want to be a part of research being able to have input in what we do and how we do it. But, I don't have a PhD, am not planning on getting one, and I actually don't have any desire to lead any projects. I really think I do well in a supporting role, but I would like to be mainly intellectually supportive with only some administrative suppport work. So, I'm kind of stuck about what that position would be. I know it doesn't exist in my current organization, but I think I'm ready for a change anyway.

  • I have my dream job, but I hate it because of the people I'm surrounded with.

It's really defeating to know you have your dream job, this opportunity isn't likely to come around again, and you dread going to work every day.
