We think there is something living in our attic!

We have an attic that we don't use at all....I think the last time we were up there was almost 5 years ago when we were re-doing the bathroom and had to replace the old exhaust fan.  The opening is probably 3X3 and the only thing we could get up there would be tiny boxes, so it sits unused.

Over the last week I have had a hard time falling asleep and almost every night, pretty late, I've heard a few thuds.  At first I thought it was the cats downstairs, but 3 out of the 5 times the thuds were directly overhead.  I mentioned this to DH and of course his response is the same as mine would have been "I'm not sticking my head up there."  So I know this sounds silly, but WTH should we do?? I don't want to call an exterminator right away and spend the money, but any other ideas?  We feel like total idiots because we are both afraid that if we stick our heads up there that something will attack us, but we are being cheap and don't just want to call an exterminator if it's really nothing.

  • stick your hand up there with a camera...but I doubt you'll see anything...it's probably a bird
  • This may sound totally bizarre but is there any way to stick a video camera up there to look around without having to totally open the door or you yourselves having to go up there?? I'd be terrified...and probably call my FIL to come scope it out!

  • Seriously, a girl in my office and I were just talking about this yesterday.  Our office is a house and it used to be a drug house (the pics before remodel were crazy).  I don't usually believe in ghosts or paranormal activity, but this house surely makes me question.  I randomly asked her yesterday about noises and she confirmed she had heard things before, even so much that she has come up to my office bc she thought I was here and had someone drop me off.  Yesterday after the conversation, it sounded like a door opened/creaked, but nothing did.  We have an attic similar to what you described in here and I know there are boxes up there that we stored when we first moved in (christmas tree, ornaments and no clue what else).  I REFUSE to get up there.

I don't have any advice really because I'd be freaked out if I lived in my office given the noises that we here other times..  What about having a flashlight on, shining it up in there, then sticking your head up...at least you could see alittle something.

  • ummmm - get your dad to do it??

LOL - you're going to have to suck it up and go up there and look.  Just go during the day and bring a flashlight.  If you see droppings, you'll know there's a critter up there.

It's funny you posted this because we joke around that when we hear weird noises its "GiGi" who is the old woman who was the original owner of the house.  We are the third owners of the house and our one neighbor tells us all these stories about the ecentric old woman, GiGi, that built the house and lived there up until about 9 years ago.  We even joked this morning that I heard Gigi again last night.

Kathryn, I think I am going to have to call my dad.  He'll tell us we are being ridic. but at the same time I know he likes it when we call him to help on house stuff.

  • Ooh, good luck!  My mom had a racoon that got into her attic and basement and it was a nightmare. Hopefully that is not what you have and it's only a bird or something.  If you eventually need a trapping company, my mom used one out of Edgewater that she loved and they catch and release the critters. I can find out the name if it comes down to needing one.
  • I would just peek up there. Growing up we often had mice in our attic and the noise they made sounded like a much larger animal.
  • If you need a trap and release guy who is 110% honest and reasonable, call Andre at Veteran's Pest Control.

He knows I am terrified of snakes. If he is in the area, he will leave a tag on the door saying he stopped to see if there was any snake activity around my house.  God.Love.Him.
