student loans

i am taking one class at community college this semester. I went to pay my student loans and all my government loans automatically went into forbearance. I didn't ask for it they just did because of my enrollment.

is this usual for only taking one class? not to mention they are giving me to 2014 to pay again?

Re: student loans

  • Yes, that is normal. However, I would continue to pay because otherwise the interest continues to accrue.
  • To keep funds liquid I'm using my loan money this month towards the course. Is it easy to have it taken off next month to start payment again? My only worry is everything was on automatic deduction.
  • The loans only go into an in-school deferment if the course you are taking is worth enough credits to consider you a halftime student.  If the course is at CCP, you have to take 6 credits to qualify for the deferment.  As soon as you stop taking classes it will go back into repayment.

I would just call whomever services your loan and verify that it should be on in school deferment, otherwise they can hit you with late fees.  This happened to me before because the school sent over that I was halftime but I really wasn't and when they realized their mistake they updated the loan company and then they called me and told me I owed two months of payments and late fees.  Not fun.  If you want to keep paying and it is rightly on deferment, I would ask them the best way to do that.

ETA: the 2014 thing is an estimate on how long it would take you to get an associates degree.  They send a two or three date like that once you enroll in classes even if your intention is only for one semester but once the school reports you're not taking classes next semester your loans kick in.

  • I would call the loan company, have them lift the deferment and continue to pay as you were. This happened to me when I started grad school. I just contacted them, informed them that a deferment was unnecessary and my automatic payments continued the following month

great to know. i am going to give them a call to make sure! its a 4 credit course so i doubt i'm a part time student.

  • never mind my automatic debits are coming out because i didn't turn them off. so i am still paying the loan it just says i don't have to.

    thanks ladies!
