Getting rid of a mouse....
Any advice to get rid of a mouse? We saw a mouse run into our apt this morning and it is currently in my bedroom closet. *groan*
We bought mothballs and put them in the kitchen and closets as a deterrent. We also got spin traps and baited them with peanut butter. Any other advice?
Does anyone have a cat that likes to catch mice they are willing to loan me???
Re: Getting rid of a mouse....
I have 4 cats that are pretty dumb. lol I always know when they see a bug on the floor...they just crouch down and watch it. Real useless cats. lol
Good luck with the mouse! =/
A few drops of Peppermint Oil (from GNC or other health food store) on a cotton ball should do the trick. Mice haaate the smell it is very intense. Place a few cotton balls in the bedroom and it should come out. We had a mouse over the winter and the peppermint did the trick.
I don't either - we used to have mice in our old apartment that would make a run one at a time every night from under our fridge to under our kitchen sink (I'm not sure why they all did this as a family every night!), and I used to stand there and distract my cat so she couldn't catch them :-) They never came out any other time (with two cats in a one-bedroom apartment they'd be pretty dumb to go running around) and I didn't want to kill them! I also found one of my cats stalking a mouse once and cornered it and caught it with a cup before he could. My DH thought I was insane, but I actually think mice are cute! I'd prefer mice to bugs any day!!
Twice I woke up to my cat lounging next to a dead mouse and it was so sad! And really gross.....weird that I can catch a live mouse with my hands and a cup, but once it's dead I am too grossed out to touch it.
I don't know what a spin trap is, but have you tried any of the humane traps in case you have more? Then you can just release them.
Hi Mrs.Kocal. Thanks for sharing the stories, lol. I would be too creeped out to touch a mouse even alive. Plus they harbor disease. When I was googling, I read you should wear gloves whenever handling mice. But then again, I generally don't like to touch any animals (even people's pets). Were did you release the mouse once you caught it? I live in the middle of Manhattan! I don't want it to go into someone else's building (or come back to mine. It is not like there is any heavily wooded area in easy access.
The spin trap is a little box with bait (peanut butter) inside. The mouse goes in, the trap closes and instantly kills the mouse. So at least it is not torturous...
that's good - as long as you don't use one of those glue traps. Ugh, they are so awful they should be illegal!!
When i caught the live mouse, I put a cup over it so I didn't touch it, and slid paper underneath to keep it in there until I took it outside. I live in Queens and we had a backyard in our apartment (it was in a two family home) so I let it go out there. It probably ran right back inside, lol.
I definitely would only touch a pet mouse without gloves, though - didn't mice carry the black plague?! They are cute but from a distance!
Haha, well yea, I do think mice are kind of cute. I said to my husband, if we can catch it alive, then we can have a pet mouse! LOL He looked at me kind of funny and said these mice have diseases. It could be from the subway or anywhere!
BTW, NYCBella41 - I got a 4oz bottle of peppermint oil from GNC on sale for $17! I put that around the apt. Now if only I could get rid of the moth ball smell....
The exterminator came today. He put foam in all the holes he could find, that fill up the hole and keep out the mouse. He also gave me glue traps. I am going to put those under the kitchen sink and not use them. I felt so bad about the mouse getting caught in the spin trap, even though it was instantaneous death, that I don't think I could handle seeing a mouse die a slow and painful death on one of those things. Hopefully this solves our problem.
We have used the glue traps and they are awful, awful, awful.
Luckily my two cats are amazing hunters. I know that neighbors have had a mouse issue but I have never seen a sign of mouse around here.
My dad had a mouse thing for a couple of months when his building moved where they store the garbage but didn't change the exterminator's route. After a while it was resolved. Or so he thought.
A few months after he was mouse free he cat-sat for us when we went away. Not 20 minutes after I dropped my two boys off at his house he was on my cell phone hysterical that they had caught a mouse and proudly presented it to him and then ate it before he could stop them!!
All these mouse stories! This seems to be a popular thread, LOL!
We do have these sonic thingamabobbers that are plugged into the wall in the kitchen and bedroom that are supposed to keep pests away. Clearly it didn't work.
