DH and I are taking a little road trip down PCH (Highway 1) for our anniversary. We're "starting" in the Monterey/Carmel area (meaning we're driving straight there from home, and that's where we're staying the first night). And then we're going down as far as Laguna Beach before turning around and coming home.
We already have all of our hotel rooms booked. However, I would love some suggestions of things we should consider checking out along the way (ideally it should be along Highway 1, or fairly close). This could include anything from restaurants, museums, great beaches, sights to see, fun excursions (boat ride to an island? a few hours at a hot springs place?), or whatever else you think is cool!
Re: Pacific Coast Highway suggestions?
Big Sur is a great place to hike. The Julia Pfeiffer Burns park is super cool. Plus, check out the waterfall on the beach by Highway 1.
Are you stopping in Cambria? I love Cambria! The Hamlet at Moonstone Gardens is a restaurant just north of town overlooking Highway 1. Find out what time the sun sets and reserve a table if it's on a weekend (they have a piano player on the weekends there too). You can watch the sun set over the Pacific while eating a yummy dinner.
Also in Cambria: you can comb through the little moonstones on Moonstone Beach, walk the shops and galleries, get breakfast at the Parisian Cafe (not positive on the name).

We're staying one night in Big Sur. We do have another trip planned for later in August to go backpacking in Big Sur. But I doubt we'll see the waterfall on that, so I'll add that to the list!
Do they only do it on weekends? I think we'll be in that area on Monday (staying in SLO Monday night). Are they open all week (even without the piano player)?
The moonstone beach sounds awesome. And I'll see if I can find the name of the cafe. We'll need a place to stop for breakfast or lunch on Monday as we're headed down that way anyway.
Thanks! Hearst Castle is definitely on our list! Neither of us have ever been.
Oh.... and I almost forgot! Highway 1 should be re-opened (after that landslide near Big Sur I mentioned a while ago)!

Ooh, I went backpacking in Big Sur once. It was great!
As for Cambria, the restaurant, the Hamlet at Moonstone Gardens is open every day. I'd just recommend reservations for dinner on weekends and I think the piano player is only there on weekends. We got married on the bluffs across the street from there and had our reception at the restaurant downstairs. There's a pretty succulent garden out back you can stroll around in. And their fried brie with apples is to die for.
I finally found the cafe. The French Corner Bakery. Duh. Was totally off on that one. It's pastries and coffee and tea mostly. No eggs or full breakfasts.

Make sure Highway 1 around Big Sur is open because a part of the road collapsed a couple of months ago and they were working on fixing it. I'm pretty sure it's open by now.
I second Hearst Castle in San Simeon. It's such a neat place and the views are beautiful. There's also Mission Carmel and Mission San Luis Obispo. Splash Cafe in Pismo has award winning clam chowder (I recently had it for the first time in a long time and it was soooo good) and I LOVE Moonstone Bar and Grill in Cambria. They also have amazing clam chowder and I LOVE their fish tacos. There's also another restaurant in Cambria called Main Street Bar and Grill and they have killer bbq ribs.
Thanks! It just reopened like a week ago. We had no clue when we first started planning until someone mentioned it to us. We had worked out a back-up plan (taking Nacimiento Ferguson Road to 101, and then reconnect with Hwy 1 in Cambria). But, it looks like that shouldn't be needed anymore!
Yum. DH and I loooove clam chowder, so that's definitely going on the list! Thanks!
We went to SLO/Pismo Beach for our anniversary last year. I was going to recommend Splash Cafe...my mouth is watering just thinking about it! It's kind of a hole in the wall and it's always packed with no place to sit, but sooo worth it.
Also, you must eat at Firestone Grill in SLO. It's a college bar type place but their tri tip sandwich is to die for and they have a great patio. There's a pizza place right across the street from Firestone's that's really good also.
