Gluten-free and vegetarian
I'm a bridesmaid in a wedding and for the shower they are wanting to do a brunch menu, but everything needs to be gluten-free and vegetarian (brides' moms are both gluten-free and brides are both vegetarian which I think is a recent development for one of them!). I have zero experience with both. Does anybody have recipes or links to blogs/websites that have recipes that fit this description? I feel quite lost! lol
TIA!
Re: Gluten-free and vegetarian
Are you doing the planning/cooking for the shower? Will some be catered or is it all going to be homemade?
There are tons of resources and recipes out there for vegetarians. I'm not sure what kind of menu you're going for but there are good recipes in Vegetarian Times Magazine (they have a web site) and one of my favorite cookbooks is Mark Bittman's "How to Cook Everything Vegetarian." You can also do a recipe search at Epicurious.com and mark "gluten-free" and/or "vegetarian" and see what comes up. If you Google gluten-free recipes, I'm sure lots of stuff will come up.
Just be aware if you're cooking yourself that a lot of seemingly innocuous ingredients have gluten in them (like soy sauce - who knew). So always double check.
If you're looking to buy food elsewhere, Mariposa Baking Company in Oakland is a great gluten-free bakery. They have both sweet and savory stuff.
I don't normally post here, but I'm gluten-free so...
Hands down the best GF blog
http://glutenfreegirl.com/
She does all GF and includes a lot of other dietary restrictions in her recipes including vegetarian.
Also, for a good selection of GF items check out Trader Joe's. If you go to their website you can actually download a comprehensive list of all of their GF stuff. Also check out Safeway, they a have surprising selection of foods, including a lot of baked goods like GF cake. If you're not strapped for cash Whole Foods is a great option as well.
ETA: Here's a pretty good list of ingredients that contain gluten. http://www.celiac.com/articles/182/1/Unsafe-Gluten-Free-Food-List-Unsafe-Ingredients/Page1.html You have to be really careful when reading ingredients. Like a PP said, things like soy sauce, many kinds of sauces and dressings. It's really hard to know what does and doesn't have it. That's why I would stick to a list like the one TJs has. You also might want to find out what kind of problem the people have with gluten (how bad it is). There are some items out there that will have a warning on them that say something along the lines of "made on shared equipment with items that may have contained gluten." For people with very serious problems with gluten you would have to stay away from those products even thought the it is technically GF.
Can't help you with gluten free (and I'd get input from the gluten free folks there just be safe. I know gf folks who won't even use the same toaster as a non gf-er).
Vegetarian brunch options should be pretty easy though. Just put dishes out that don't contain meat. Some ideas:
Fruit/fruit salad
crackers and cheese
veggie plate with dip
cinnamon rolls
muffins/croissants/scones/bagels
sour cream cucumbers
cucumber finger sandwiches
meatless quiche
banana bread
Caprese salad on a stick (toothpicks or skewers with tomato, mozzarella and basil on them)
bruschetta
