Do dilators work?

I am a virgin bride-to-be and am interested to know if any women tried dilators before their first time, and if they did, if they actually worked. I am terribly fearful of my first time being painful, as I am so tight I cannot wear tampons without severe pain.

Any input would be appreciated! Thank you!

Re: Do dilators work?

  • I'm sorry you're having pain/tightness issues. :(

Dilators absolutely do work in many cases. However, I would go to your gynecologist first to make sure that everything is okay and talk to her about using them. Also, you can sometimes get a deal on them if you get them through your doctor's office rather than online or whatever.

Dilators, when used regularly (ie. every day for 5-20 minutes for a period of time) will help you stretch out the vaginal muscles and also help you to learn how to use your pelvic floor muscles so that you can tighten and release them depending on how tight they feel. If you want to start small, you can try inserting a finger (your pinkie at first if you need to, that will be about the size of the first dilator anyway) and then trying to graduate to two, move them, etc.

Good luck with everything and let me know if you have anymore questions!

  • dilators saved my marriage!!!! well really it was my willingness to use them. But my husband and I tried to have sex for about 3 months after we got married and were unsuccessful. I went to a physical therapist at the referral of my ob/gyn. I am still using them to keep myself stretched out while my husband is travels. He's out of town a lot with his job. Use them! They are a life saver for me! Also, if you don't wanna buy the whole set, do like I did and just buy a few cheap vibrators (different sized) and use those. I haven't even put batteries in mine. Hope this helps!!! :) And you might should do all this before you get married so you'll be more ready!

  • Do you masturbate?  Perhaps you should try toys as well.

I used to have issues with tampons and going to the GYN when I was a teen and most of it was in my head.  I would tense up so it was painful.

If you are more comfortable with yourself and giving yourself pleasure it should be easier with your soon to be husband as well.

  • Yes sounds like you need to use them if tampons hurt because when you reach a point where dilators and intercourse are comfortable you can't even feel a tampon inside you.

I got a set and an extremely helpful workbook from vaginismus.com... make sure you get the book because it will teach you step by step how to succesfully have pain free sex if you have trouble when you get married. Have no fear, you are not alone because this is a common issue a lot of girls have, especially when they build up so much pressure on having sex for the first time.

  • Thank you so much for all of your advice! I have decided that I will use them.

    Thanks again ladies!

  • if its not working for you ask your ob, s/he give you steps to 'stretch' yourself.
