Those of you "blessed" with sugar ants during this drought

Ours showed up earlier this week, coming under the kitchen window to the counter. Poor rrr's Honey Bunches of Oats with Peaches was crawling with them the other morning. eeww!

I bought 2 different types of ant baits at kroger and never saw any evidence that the ants were even going in to check it out. Finally yesterday I realized that I had some borax in the laundry room from when I was making my own laundry detergent. I mixed some with sugar and water and put it in a plastic lid right where they were hanging out. Last night at 10ish they were gorging themselves on the stuff, and tonight I haven't seen a single one!

  • We've had them off and on.  Last year they were awful!  Borax was what did the trick.  We called a pest guy out, and he treated them with Borax syrup.  I picked up some liquid Terro Ant Killer at Home Depot to spot treat as needed.  Works like a charm.

That stuff is definitely the best! It's Borax, so your homemade version was essentially the same thing. It's great!

  • Oh yes, we need to break out the borax... we have sugar ants AND regular ants. Argh. It sucks.

I've been using some cinnamon and raid in a pinch, but we really need to lure them all away.

  • I've not tried this, so I can't swear to it, but I've been told if you sprinkle Sweet and Low for them, they'll be attracted to it and eat it b/c of the sweetness, but it'll kill them.

Also, if you put dish soap along where they coming into the house, they will get stuck in the dish soap and drown.

  • lol, mine come in RIGHT BY the dish soap!!!

i have used those little ivory RAID ant baits with success.

is borax pet-safe?  i have a huge ant issue in my backyard that no ant-killer is taking care of.

  • I put out Borax syrup last night and have seen exactly 1 ant today. I have high hopes.

Borax is pet safe, but I'm not sure that it's plant safe in larger quantities.

You can probably put it out in the yard once, but repeated application will kill the grass and everything else growing out there.

And no, it's not pet safe or child safe.

Jax is it a fire ant problem?

Wood ants (carpenter ants) are not harmful.  Scary because they look like little fire ants but overall beneficial to garden areas.  Not so much if found around your house.

Fire ants are another story.  We have never had a problem using this approach:
