Choosing a DSLR camera

Hi Ladies,

I would love help choosing my first DSLR camera! I've narrowed it down to the CannonT3EF-S 18-55IS Kit & Nikon D3000. Any help would be appreciated.

You can't really go wrong with either a Canon or the D3000. It's usually just a matter of preference - they are set up and feel different to use. Try them out at a store and see which is more comfortable.

Personally, I love my D3000. I posted my take on it in another post about halfway down the page.

You should go somewhere that has them so you can hold them and try them out.  Sometimes the way the camera feels can make all the difference when the basic specs are the same.

This. I also check to see if there are any other features I want. I am a fan of taking macro shots, so I make sure this is a good feature on the one I choose.

  • Definitely hold both models before buying.  The controls are placed differently so check to see how easily your fingers can reach the different controls.  Also check the menu interface to see if you have a preference.
  • Like others have said, go somewhere that you'll be able to hold and try the cameras out first. Canon and Nikon are set up very different and when it comes down to it it's all a matter of preference. Play around with each of them for awhile and see which you like more, which is easier for you to use, and which one suits you more. Good luck!

  • Great! I'll take a trip to the store tomorrow...I think that I just get distracted when I'm there & then I'm overwhelmed. ha Thanks so much ladies!

  • I completely agree with AmyRI. You need to be comfortable with the device as this will be your first DSLR. However, I am Canon enthusiast and I would personally prefer the Canon piece for its user friendly features.
