moms out there

Yes I know I could post this on the bump but I like everyone here better and I know there are moms on here too. so here goes.... I went to the doctor last week and heard the baby's heartbeat for the first time :) Everything went very well except she was a little concerned that I haven't put on any weight yet ( i lost about 8lbs in the first few weeks from being so sick) and I don't know how to remedy this.  I feel like I eat ALL the time and if I eat anymore I will explode or start throwing up again. She has barred me from exercise until my next app in 4 weeks :( I don't want to just eat crap (which I know would help me put on weight) so has anyone successfully gained weight while still eating healthy (i know what a moron question right).  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Happy Monday!

Re: moms out there

  • The first 15 or so weeks I was pregnant with E, I was losing weight but the baby was gaining. I don't think I showed weight gain until around my 20th week just because I was so sick in the 1st tri. My OB didn't worry about it because he could tell the baby was gaining and just taking my excess weight. I would try eating lots of fruits, dairy products (yougart, ice cream, oatmeal, cheeses), all fatty stuff, no fat free anything. You can try pastas as well.

Oh, I started getting REALLY bad heartburn about that time too. The only thing that helped was ice cream. It also helped me gain weight as well.

  • I think I would just keep eating like you normally do and it'll catch up with you.  I had pneumonia around 11 weeks this time and lost a lot of weight.  I gained 9 lbs between my 20 and 24 weeks appt for a net weight gain of 9 lbs at the time and it's just been steadily going up since then.

I was SHOCKED at the 9lbs, buy my dr. just said it was normal and expected since I hadn't gained anything up to that point.

  • Thanks for the reassurance guys! I will try all the dairy and pastas and stuff. I just feel like I have been stuffing my face lately i was shocked to hear her say I had gained nothing.  I will try not to worry so much I know the weight will come soon. lol

  • Have you seen/heard of the Brewer Pregnancy Diet?  Maybe take a look at it and make sure you're getting enough protein, fats/oils, and dairy?...

Here is the basic plan: http://www.blueribbonbaby.org/brewer-diet-checklists/brewer-diet-basic-plan-checklist/

  • As long as you're eating healthy and taking in 300 extra calories a day over your pre-preggo weight, you'll probably start gaining without any extra effort on your part.  With #2, I didn't gain anything for about 12 weeks, and then out of nowhere, at my 14 week appt., I'd put on 10 pounds.
  • Maybe just try to eat stuff that is high in good fat? Avocados, peanut butter, ect? I lost 12 pounds during my 1st tri but I had a little room to spare to begin with ;-)

  • I'm a firm believer in your body will do what it needs to do. Mine gained 55 and 65lbs with both of my pregnancies but it all came off both times. Some women lose weight and gain maybe 5lbs in the end. It's all about how you are made and what your body needs to do to support a growing baby. Don't stress about it.
  • If you were considered a healthy and thriving weight prior to pregnancy this shouldn't really be an issue and I am concerned that your doctor is being so tough on you about not gaining.

I was considered a healthy weight prior to pregnancy and then I dropped 14 pounds between weeks 7 and 16 due to hyperemesis gravidarum. So when I gained back they just kept my pre-pregnancy weight as the ideal weight to get back to before counting weight gained.  I gained 19 pounds with my pregnancy.  My doctor was never concerned about my weight, she constantly reassured me because I was worried I was not helping EJ thrive.  (I continued to get IV fluids weekly until around 17 or 18 weeks if I recall correctly because it took me a long time to get an appetite back, I am gonna have to re-read some old blogs and journals to remember).

If you were below ideal weight prior to pregnancy that changes things.  My doctor told me that if I had been below that ideal weight then she would have done more about getting me to gain.  So perhaps you should ask your doctor more specific questions about why and how she wants you to go about this.

Also, it looks like you are only 12 weeks in (or maybe I read that wrong?) so it seems silly that your doctor is worrying about it now (since I am guessing you just recently got over being sick).

ETA: Ok, just checked my old writings and I was only up 5 pounds at 24 weeks.  I dunno if that helps put your mind at ease?

I am 23 yrs old. about 5'4 and 120 lbs (on my last weigh in last thurs). I have always been about this weight give or take a few lbs.  I do pilates 3-4 times a week and have done that for the past 8 or so years.  Yes I am 12 (almost 13 weeks) pregnant. And have been super sick (they had to put me on meds to help me keep anything down) but luckily have been able to eat for about 2 weeks now with no problem. I know that she is concerned about genstational diabetes so I am being tested early for that and again at the regular time. But other than that I didn't know i was supposed to be gaining so soon. If she has the same concerns at my next visit i will definitely ask her how she would like me to go about doing what she thinks i need to do.

Being my first pregnancy it just gets kinda scary when the ob says that she has concerns. I really do appreciate all of the thoughtful advice.

    Thank you all again.

Oh what a bummer.  I had GD also.  Sounds like you are having a rough go of things right now.  I promise it is all worth it.
