care package ideas?

I want to send a care package to a friend who had to go to her hometown (5 hours away) to care for an elderly parent who's moving to a nursing home. She'll be there 2-3 weeks at a minimum, maybe longer. The whole situation is really tough for her and I'd like to send something to try cheer her up a little bit.

Any ideas on what to send? Candy/treats/snacks? Magazines? Books?

Her dad lives in a really small town (less than 200 people) so restaurant or coffee shop gift cards aren't really useful there as there's only one little local cafe.

Re: care package ideas?

  • You mentioned coffee gift cards?.if you think she likes a certain place for coffee could you send her a bag from her fav coffee house?   I would like to get an assortment of magazines if I was stuck in a small town, but she might be able to get them herself from a gas station.

Is your friend is someone you hang out with in a group on a regular basis?  When I had a friend in Iraq, I took pictures of his friends doing things and had them write him a note on the back and send them off?.it was his favorite thing I sent because he felt like he was still a little in the loop of all the fun things his friends were doing and that he was not forgotten about.  However, I had a lot of time to put those together, you might not be able to do that.  Maybe you could take one quick picture of your group with a ?thinking of you sign? and have everyone write a little note.

Nail polish (even if she has plenty getting it might make her stop and think that maybe she would take a little time for herself during the day).

A good book...if you know a good funny book, that might be best.

  • The new Tina Faye book Bossypants is pretty light and funny. Otherwise David Sedaris is great in that you can just catch a chapter at a time. It's very thoughtful of you.  Maybe an Itunes giftcard for some new music?

  • My aunt used to bake cookies and mail them to me - they were one of my favorite packages to get in the mail! I've also heard good things about Tina Fey's Bossypants. Is she into any TV shows? A dvd of a season of her favorite show could be a nice way to pass the time.
