What's the summary on these things? Safe for pregnant women? Opt out for just me or the kids to? Go through it because it's no big deal?
We fly out of Newark, NJ on Friday and I am trying to cover all my bases. I am slowly freaking out about how the heck I am going to handle the kids, the luggage, and everything else. gah!
Re: Airport Body Scanners
I think people go a little nutso over things. I've flown 4 times while pregant (so far) and it didn't even occur to me this would be an issue. So I lurked on the bump to see if they were talking about it. And they were. Some say avoid it all costs and some say it's no big deal. I walked through them every time because I believe if there was real danger, there would be a sign that says "pregnant women should not be scanned."
Of course, this is just my opinion. Do what you're comfortable with.
I agree that going through them while pregnant is okay. I have been through them several times will pregnant. On the TSA's website (or some other gov't website) they show them being safer than cell phone use and say that the exposure from the scan is the same as you receive in only 2 minutes of flying. So, yeah, I go through them. So much easier than a pat down and such.
Just relax with the kids. Easier said than done, huh? Newark airport security is okay (Better than some terminals in Philly). My only advice is place all the kid's shoes/items through the scanner first so that you can have them getting redressed while you are wrangling bags off the belt and whatnot. Good luck!
When I flew last month, I didn't have to go through the new scanners nor did I see anyone else asked to go through. They just sat there empty. So I wouldn't get too concerned about them. I was under the impression lots of people had to go through them.
Regardless, as others have said, pretty sure xray machine and new body scanners are all plenty safe for kids and preggos.
Ditto this. I asked for a pat down and they had no problem accommodating and were super friendly about it. I just had to wait longer which might be a pita for you with the kids. The TSA person told me there's no more radiation than a cell phone and that no one can see the screen publicly.
We just flew out of Newark a month ago and didn't even see ANY scanners, I have no clue what they even look like. We just walked through the normal metal detectors, and this was an international flight.
