Pool question: chlorinator

Should community pools be used if the chlorinator is broken? I don't have a pool, so I don't know how long you can go without one.

Re: Pool question: chlorinator

  • Most likely they are shocking it daily, which is a high dose of chlorine.  As long as it is being shocked you are ok for awhile.  Chlorine can also be placed in skimmers and floaters to maintain the levels.  As long as it is being shocked it is ok.  No chlorine at all = cesspool, with this heat it becomes a breeding ground for crap.

  • Is it safe to assume that cloudy water doesn't necessarily mean there is harmful crap? LO has had pinkeye and a fever since Sunday am, and we went in the pool Saturday pm. I don't know when it broke on Saturday.

  • Cloudy water isn't good.  It usually means there are too many foreign contaminants in it, and it needs to be shocked.  It is cloudy all the time, I would stay out of it.  Ours will get cloudy if we've had a bunch of people in the pools.  Sunscreen, lotion, kids, dogs, etc. can make it cloudy.
