Farmers markets

So Matt and I have been talking about wanting to shop at farmers' markets this summer/fall and yesterday I found out there is one right down the street from my office (Yarmouth) on Thursday afternoons! This Thurs. I want to walk down and check it out after work. Yay! Are there any other good ones around that you go to? I am so excited!

Re: Farmers markets

  • I remember Brunswick having a pretty awesome one, although I think their hours were during the week from like 8-2, which can make it a little tricky to get to if you work full time. Bath has one on Saturdays from 8-12 down on the waterfront that's really nice to stroll through too. There's also a great smaller one in Boothbay on Thursdays, as well as a farm boat (awesome!) that used to come to our little community dock.

Mmmm... now I want a pile of fresh produce to nosh on!

  • Lewiston has been stepping up the farmer's markets lately. Starting this past Sunday, there's one every Sunday at the Bates Mill # 5 from 10:30-2:30. And they still have the one at St. Mary's parking lot on Campus Avenue on Wednesdays and there's also one on Tuesdays (can't remember where, though).

I don't know if New Gloucester is still doing their Sunday farmer's markets-- Jess P. might know (Jess do you still sell your ReuseZone stuff there?)...

  • I've never been but there is one on Fridays at Beans.

Here is an index of markets:

  • This has been my favorite thing about living in Gardiner! I look forward to Wednesday now so that I can go explore all of the yummy things they have to offer. I was a bit disappointed that I wasn't able to save money on produce but I have decided that it is worth it to know where my food is coming from.

The beef lady knows me by name now, how often can you say that? You can really tell the difference from the processed stuff that comes in the store. Christmas presents for the men in our family this year will definitely be steaks and burgers from them.

    Enjoy!

  • Saturday mornings from 9-12 there is a farmer's market at the Cumberland Town Hall. It is only a few minutes from my house so I stop in often. It isn't huge (maybe 12 vendors?) but the food is delish and there are alpacas and baby goats!

Brunswick has one on the mall on Fridays, and one at Crystal Farm on Saturdays, I think.  I've never been to the one at the Farm, but I've heard it's good.

  • I'm love Farmer's Markets and usually go to 2 a week (Wells and Kennebunk) Besides getting some yummy, local stuff it's a free activity for Caroline. She LOVES walking around and waving at everyone!

We go to the Portland Market on Saturdays and our CSA farm, who is a part of it, is also a two minute walk from our house.  They do pick ups on Thursdays.  Unfortunately, the GNG market is not happening this summer and instead they are doing one at the apple orchard weekly in the fall.  At least that was the last I heard.  I wasn't able to commit this summer anyway with a new job.

Scarborough also has one every Sunday that's a good one to hit.

  • We love the ones in Portland...Wednesday and Saturday...plus they had a winter market, too...the worst part is that we always walk there and then want to buy too much to walk home with.
