Re: Trying not to use chemicals on carpet

  • I'm not very good at carpet (we removed all of ours).  Do you know what the stain is from?

  • Carpets are hard (as you likely know) b/c you can't really rinse it... any dirt in the pad comes up as it dries.  Assuming you've blotted up what you can, i would try vinegar, first.  If that doesn't work, you could try oxiclean; i remember seeing directions for how to use it on carpet on the box.  There's a spray product, too, but i don't know what's in it.

  • I always use Oxiclean.  It's amazing at removing stains, but you may need to scrub a bit.  I dropped a gigantic glass of fruit punch on my white carpet and was able to get it out completely.

  • We have white/beige carpet in our family room and I have yet to have a stain that I couldn't get out.  Obviously it is ideal to catch the spill/stain when it occurs and use a towel/rag and just place it over the spot and stand.  Usually the majority of the liquid will be completely absorbed.  You may want to try spraying the stain w/water and allowing the water to sit for a few minutes, continue to spray until thoroughly wet.  Then try using a towel and standing on it.  You'll want to flip the towel or use multiple towels and do this until no more will come up.  Then try spraying w/white vinger and repeat the process.
  • I use Gloves Off stain remover or Oxiclean.
  • lemon juice, if allowed to soak for an extended period of time, works similarly to bleach, without the noxious fumes.

for my whites in the laundry i use 1part lemon juice to 10part water  and let it soak over night in a bucket and it brightens them and removes any stains, oil or otherwise. perhaps it will work on carpet.

i have wood floors, otherwise im sure i would have tried it by now!

  • We use vinegar and then we scrub in baking powder and then put peroxide over it.

We use vinegar in the wash to get stains out of shirts as well as it is a fabric softner

  • I use my spray bottle of vinegar, water and soap, that I use for general cleaning. I find it works well for all stains. I bring as much stain out as I can with a dry rag, then clean water, then work with the spray cleaner and baking soda. Let dry, vacuum, and repeat if nec.
