lemon juice, if allowed to soak for an extended period of time, works similarly to bleach, without the noxious fumes.
for my whites in the laundry i use 1part lemon juice to 10part water and let it soak over night in a bucket and it brightens them and removes any stains, oil or otherwise. perhaps it will work on carpet.
i have wood floors, otherwise im sure i would have tried it by now!
We use vinegar and then we scrub in baking powder and then put peroxide over it.
We use vinegar in the wash to get stains out of shirts as well as it is a fabric softner
