Stolen bike for sale
We bought two bikes shortly after moving to Sacramento. We would ride everywhere: restaurants, concerts, groceries, parks, gym, etc. Last week, I woke up to find that my bike had been stolen from our front porch! I was very frustrated. Since then I can't help but check every bike that passes by me, hoping to see my dear, stolen bike. We've also been checking Craig's list hoping to see it for sale. Last night I had this great idea: I posted an add on Craig's list with pictures of my bike and informed potential buyers that it was my bike, it had been stolen, and if anybody tried to sell them my bike, to report to the police. I also pleaded with the thief to do the right thing and return my bike.
Today, as I approach our house I see this white woman's bike on our front porch! As I get closer I notice some differences, the black handlebars, the missing fenders, etc. Well, it turns out this was not my stolen bike. My DH, realizing how much I was mourning the loss of my bike, went out to all used bike stores. He was looking to see if he spotted my bike for sale. He couldn't find my bike, so he decided to get me a new one! He's the best husband ever

I gotta admit, your mention of a "white woman's bike" on your porch confused me for a minute. Are white women's' bikes different than black women's bikes? Oy.

Did you call the local PD to report it stolen? If by chance you have the serial number on the bike they can enter it into a national data base. This way if an Officer stops someone on a bicycle for driving the wrong way or whatever and runs the serial number it will come up as stolen and that person will go to jail for possession of stolen property, 496 of the Calif Penal Code.
Anyhow, I'm not sure if you have the serial number but if you do, you should call. Also, you can call into the PD just to see if maybe they picked it up anyhow and it's in the found property.

My DH (a police detective) has actually worked on cases for stolen bikes before where he went undercover to meet a person selling a bike (e.g. through Craigslist) that they believed was a stolen bike they were investigating.
Considering how much many bikes cost, it could be considered Grand Theft (which could be charged as a felony!)

That's good to know. I don't have the serial number for my old bike, but I'll definitely write down the one for my new bike. I also bought a new lock and it comes with paperwork to have it registered. If the someone breaks the lock and steal the bike they will cover the loss. So I was told.
Could you go to the place where you bought it from? They might have your name on file with the serial number.
Btw...possession of stolen property is always a felony regardless of the value of the object. They will likely plead it down in court but it is so worth the hassel in my opinion.
