Recently my laptop broke, literally, the hinge that attaches the screen to the keyboard broke, lifting up the plastic on the keyboard and exposing the wire that runs to the keyboard, most of the vowels need a lot of coaxing to work. Frustrating! Since I'm still in school my father is letting me borrow is old laptop but I know that I definitely need a new one.
I've been thinking about going with a Mac, I've always used Dells. The most important thing is having a laptop I can do everything from writing papers to editing pictures and videos to listening and downloading to music to video chatting with friends and family. Is there any laptops (Mac or PC) that you all can suggest?
Re: Need a new laptop
I have a Macbook Pro and I love it. I'll never own another PC again. I've had this one for 2 years and it still runs just as fast as the day I bought it.
If you can possibly wait until the end of the summer, Apple usually does really good deals for students with 10% discounts + free iPods and/or printers + discounts on software, etc. When I bought mine I got 10% off, a free iPod Touch, a free printer and 50% off all software I purchased that day. I sold the iPod and printer and made more back on the deal. :-)
This! I bought my macbook pro in '08, and it still runs wonderfully today. Mac offers student discounts, and usually, like stated above, freebies.
I was hesitant because of the price, but it has definitely proven its worth!
I agree with everyone. I bought a Macbook Pro and got a free iPod and free HP Printer. I will never use anything other than a Mac. Make sure when you buy it, buy iWork. It is way better than Microsoft office for Mac because it is created by Apple while still having the same features as the Microsoft Office suite
So... I'm going to give 2 contradictory opinions.
First is easiest - to agree with PPs. Macs are great. They are fast. They will do everything you want.
But... they are not always that great. I had a lot of problems with the 3 years I had my macbook pro. First it was the hard drive, then the battery, then the logic board, then the dvd player and battery again... You absolutely need to buy the service plan.
I loved my mac, but it was paid for by my work. When it came time to buy a new computer for myself, I couldn't stomach the $2k pricetag. I now have a 15" Dell XPS laptop, that including the warranty for even water damage for 4 years and Microsoft office, was around 1200 (I don't remember exactly, because DH's company had an amazing discount on it, so we paid 1k for it. I really like it. Windows 7 is not as obnoxious as Vista was (which was the reason I got an $$ mac for work) and with the memory in the XPS, it runs very quickly. Software is the same - I had to use Office for Mac for compatibility, so switching back to a PC is actually an upgrade because it runs better. I still use iTunes for music and videos. I hated iPhoto, so I always used Picasa for photo editing, and I still use it now. I use(d) Firefox and Thunderbird. Nothing is different for me... and I saved a TON of money.
Another vote for a MacBook Pro. I've had mine for 2 years when I got it as a refurbished one from Apple. It runs quickly and does everything I need it to do. DH is a senior network administrator and runs the network his company relies on from a MacBook Pro. We are a true Apple home, as we have 2 MacBook Pros, iMac, 2 iPads, and 2 iPod Touch.
Before I had the Apple laptop, I had a Dell and it was a nightmare. DH would never recommend a Dell to anyone anymore as their quality has gone down. He frequently recommends Lenovo's to people who are hesitant to go Mac.
Another MacBook/Pro vote here. I've had my MacBook since '08, I think, and I've never ever had a problem with it. I'm running out of memory on it but that's 'cause I don't like deleting home/family movies and photos. I have to get on that...
I just got my H a new MacBook Pro for his birthday and he's LOVING it. He had an old Dell that was on its last legs and he said that he can't compare the two. If finances are a challenge for you, you can buy it online and do the payment plan through their BarclaysBank card setup (there's a link to it somewhere on the apple.com site). If you purchase an item for over $1000 (I think it is), you can pay it off over 12 months with no interest. Smaller sum and you have 6 months, but I don't think you can get a laptop for less than $1000. I don't recommend the MacAir though - no DVD drive and it's very fragile: I've heard of a number of friends who said it was too delicate.
Good luck and enjoy your new toy!
I had a Powerbook that lasted me 5 years and replaced it with a MacBook Pro 2 years ago. I love it!
I use a Dell Vostro for work. It's a behemoth, but other than that I have no complaints. I still prefer my Mac.
Wow! I can honestly say I'm taken aback by all you Mac users. I have a friend who also works with computers and he too has suggested a Macbook Pro, so I'm going to invest in one! The college student discount plus all the other great offers is what really sold me!
Thanks ladies!!
