The 4th

What are your plans for the 4th of July? Are any of you hosting? What's on the menu? How do you plan on decorating?

Re: The 4th

  • I am having my annual party and very excited!  However this year I am hosting 2 days early and it is an American Luau Party.  We normally do a firework show but H was injured (really badly) by a firework last year so we will never be doing a show again.  This party is to celebrate the holiday but also his recovery.  Having on the 2nd leaves the 3rd and 4th for our guests to be able to attend their local towns shows.

My menu is Pulled Pork on Hawaiian Buns, Huli Huli Chicken Wings, Coconut Shrimp Skewers, Ham and Pineapple Skewers, Veggie Fried Rice, Macaroni Salad, Potato Salad, Corn Salad, Tropical Fruit Salad, Hawaiian Marshmallow Salad, Hawaiian Pizza (a cold version) and a dessert table of various red, white and blue desserts. Drinks are Hawaiian Rum Punch and Blue Moon.  Plus the usual pop, water, juice boxes and miller & bud lite.

We are expecting 50-60 people I think.  The decorations are all red, white and blue flowers, along with natural grass skirts around things, a tiki bar (I hope), lots of tiki torches and white lights with red flowers in the tents.

  • DH's aunt does a huge party every year with 40-50 people.  Since I'm not in charge, I can only say that I'm bringing triple berry pie, maybe apple pie, and maybe potato salad.  If you want the recipes, just ask.  The rest of the food is potluck - people bring some of everything, but the main dish is BBQ chicken from a local place.

  • My friend hosts a potluck every year.  Every year people want my baked beans and lemonade cake so that's what I make.  The one time I didn't make them there was almost an uprising.  I can also give recipes if you want.  They aren't linkable.
  • We're hosting (we have really good fireworks in my neighborhood) and having a low country boil with extra sides and appetizers to munch on.   No real decorations other than some tablecloths on the extra tables that will go up.

I would love the lemonade cake recipe!

  • Nothing for me this year...the 4th is our anniversary, and we won't be moved into our house yet.  But maybe next year!

  • We always have people over on the 4th (great fireworks in our neighborhood).  Since I'm due on the 8th we aren't doing anything fancy this year.  We'll probably just do burgers and sausages on the grill, pasta salad, potato salad, a fruit tray, and some light apps.  With brownies and cookies for dessert.

For decorations we usually do red, white, and blue- tablecloths, flags in the flower beds, flags  in vases for centerpieces.  And white lights draped in the pergola.

  • My bday is July 1st so the 1st we are going to dinner w/family @ a local winery.  The 2nd or 3rd will most likely be spent at SIL's.  She has a pool.  We all bring a side or two.  They "celebrate" my bday at this too :-)

  • please share your recipe for the lemonade cake....it sound refreshing!
