FMLA - FML...

I'm 7 weeks and 6 days into my intended 12-week leave for Colby's birth.

I got a call today saying that I needed written approval from my boss to take the time off beyond the 6 weeks covered by STD.
I just typed up a memo for his signature, and emailed it, but have no idea what may happen from here.  I've never made it a secret that I intended to take 12 weeks - I even had a few meetings with the HR lady about all my options, but today they decide they need to inform me about this extra requirement.

Typically for FMLA there's paperwork they want your doctor to fill out - like a certificate of health form; FMLA does guarantee you 12 weeks to bond with your baby, so if you ask the doctor to put 12 weeks, that will be what they put.  It's crappy that they're just doing this now!  HR should have given you the form a long time ago.

  • The doctor filled out paperwork months ago...  that's taken care of.  They're now saying that weeks 7 thru 12 need my boss' approval in writing.
  • UGH That sucks! How is he 7 weeks old already? Wow!
  • this should have come up long ago...don't let them hold it over your head when they are the ones that dropped the ball! :)  good luck!

  • That's lame that they JUST not noticed the missing paper work. Sorry you're having to deal with this when you shouldn't have to be worrying about work AT ALL....morons.
  • Isn't the whole point of FMLA that it guarantees you 12 weeks?  I mean, if your boss doesn't sign the letter, I think you're entitled to it either way.
