Flea control

Anyone know a good non-toxic way to control fleas on my dogs?  If it helps I have a large Husky/German Shepard mix about 100lbs and a tiny Toy Fox Terrier about 8lbs.  TIA!

Re: Flea control

  • I have a Husky/GSD mix, too!  But a miniature, compared to yours (60lb) :)

On the dog (and cat, for us)... we use flea treatment 1x/year (drops from the vet).  The prescription is for 1/mo, but our modified schedule has worked just fine, for years.

In your home, if you have carpet and on any upholstery or pet bedding the pets get on, you can use diatomaceous earth.  Borax is also used for this.  Sprinkle one or both on carpet, etc.  Let/help it settle in (brush it into the carpet) and vacuum up in a couple days/weeks.  As it can irritate lungs and eyes, while you apply it, and until it's settled into the carpet/fabric, keep pets and kids out of the room; you may also want to cover your mouth (i use a bandana).

  • There's a product called Critter Oil that I just love.  I've never seen a flea on my dog and once he even stayed at a friend's house who just a day later discovered her dog had fleas.  But still, not one on Boo (a cocker spaniel/poodle mix).  We also have 2 Jack Russells and it works great on them, too.  The only downside it's not as "easy" as chemical flea treatments.  We bath every dog at least once a week with it mixed into their shampoo and we have a spray bottle of it by our back door and we spray them down every morning before the go out and every evening when it's time for bed.  But it's worth it for their health.

For my three dogs a 1 oz bottle lasts about a year.  For your dog a 1 oz would probably last 9 months or so.

  • Thanks ladies!  Jackson and Bean will be very happy.  I've already got Borax at home and I'll get some Critter oil today.  Thanks again.
  • We use a neem oil shampoo every two weeks for prevention and diatemaceous earth to kill fleas.
