Starting baby food

We'll be adding baby food to P's diet soon and I'm curious what you ladies fed your young ones first?  I know we could try rice cereal first, but did anyone skip that and go straight to jar food or even small finger foods?  I know every baby is different, so I guess I'm just not sure what options to offer him?  He's obviously not coordinated enough to even put food in his mouth on his own.....

Those of you that have skipped jar foods and just made your own, what foods did you use and how did you do it?  I'm pretty sure I really don't have time to make all of his baby food, but I want to offer him the healthiest options possible.

I hope this post makes sense, I feel like I'm rambling a bit Stick out tongue

Re: Starting baby food

  • We skipped cereals and did Bananas, Avocados, and sweet potatoes first. I did purees for a month or so and then went to large chunks of food that the girls could get their hands on.

For purees, I just steamed the fruits and veggies. Then used a blender/food processor/ immersion blender (whatever was handy) to puree the food. It doesn't take long at all. I usually just made up a batch while making dinner and had that same fruit/veggie with dinner so I was steaming it anyway.

  • We skipped the rice cereal, but we've given her baby oatmeal cereal since the beginning.  We also started with some jar foods -- peas, carrots, green beans, peaches, pears, etc.  One of the first "solid" foods we introduced was avocado, and Z loved it. You can use them when they're really soft, and it's a very easy smooshable food for them to eat.  Bananas were also a good first food.  Z also liked the Baby Mum Mums, so I kept those on hand - especially when we were going to be away from home and I needed a quick snack available.

I remember feeling a bit overwhelmed by what we SHOULD be doing...what kinds, how much, how often, etc.  But like everything else, it somehow all just falls into place.  Enjoy!

  • I remember feeling very overwhelmed with this stage as well. We started with Earth's Best (?) Baby oatmeal and then once she did well with that we added purees. GL!

  • We did some rice cereal, but we had it on hand, because we were putting it in her formula. I'm sure you know to stick with the same food for about a week, just to make sure there are no adversions to it.

also, banana's back baby up. (this was/is true in El's case)

    P foods help/make them poop.

    Good luck!

  • We took the same approach at MrsReem. It worked super well.

I did make some purees and we also had Earth's Best jar food on hand.

  • For my 1st we started with Oatmeal and then moved on to Puree's.  With my 2nd we followed exactly what Mrs. Reem said - he's always been a big eater and this approach worked well for him.
