Curious what you ladies are keeping your a/c on with all of this heat lately. Do you change the setting if you are going out to the store versus gone at work? What about any indoor animals, are you leaving it on for them?
I'm home for most of the summer (maternity leave) so we have been leaving it at 72 degrees but I see the PG&E bill slowly rising...eeeks!

Re: s/o... so much hotness
We're trying to figure that out lately. We've been setting ours at 78-80 and with the ceiling fans going, it's not bad. Turn it off in the evenings and put fans in the windows to suck the cold air in. Problem is husband works nights and sleeps days and he's been turning it on pretty early in the day lately. I'm worried about our power bill too. As soon as we get the missing part in the mail, we'll be installing our portable air conditioner in the bedroom so we can cool that and not the whole house when he's sleeping.
Where are you anyway? Does it get hot all summer long there?

We have no a/c - it's called fog where I live
On super hot days, we just make do with keeping the house closed and curtains drawn when the sun is shining right on the house, then opening up windows and running fans in the evening when it cools down. And popsicles - those help a lot.
Most guides I've seen recommend keeping your thermostat at 78. If you're used to 72, maybe raise it one degree every day until you start to feel uncomfortable, so that it's a gradual change (and you can leave it at 75 or whatever if you find that that's as warm as you can handle it.)
I'd also call PG&E and see if they can give you any advice on this. They have all kinds of programs that can help with cost and energy reduction that a lot of people aren't aware of.
Good luck!
That's where my mind went first too...
Darn, no hot guys in here.

AC! Ha! What silliness is this? We just keep the windows open, the lights off, the oven and stove off and hope for a nice breeze! And truthfully, it works 99% of the time. Of course then there are days like Monday that were blazingly hot with not a breeze to be found. Then we're cooked. And probably will go to a movie!

So we are learning how to keep the new house cool this summer because we since we have a 2 story its hard to keep the upstairs cool without the down stairs being an ice box.
So far other than two nights earlier this week we have been able to open the windows upstairs at night and we keep our bedroom door open for cross ventilation, I run the circulation fan that is part of our AC at night but the AC itself is not running. In the morning I close the house up and close all the blinds and turn the circulation fan off. The AC gets set to 78 until I leave at 8 and then goes to 82. Its programed to come down to 78 around 4 or so when E gets home and we try to keep it at 78 until its cool enough outside to open the house up. If I were willing to leave the downstairs windows open at night it would probably cool off a little more but I'm a little nervous about doing that.
We have a ceiling fan downstairs in the living room so that helps and in our bedroom as well. In our bedroom we have 2 small fans in addition to the ceiling fan because the air doesn't move enough otherwise.
I'm in Gilroy, and it seems to be hot all summer long. I'm going to be in the same boat as your dh and was paddling along in that boat last year. My work hours are 9:15pm-7:15 am so I slept during the day too and A/C was a must. this summer I won't return back to work until late August or early September

Cool down to 102 ?!?!? Geezus!
lol I know it's not really a cool down. Poor H has been working out in the sun all day. It's supposed to start cooling down tomorrow and we're looking at about 92 for the weekend. Not too bad.
