So I drove a 1993 Toyota Camry for 8 years with no accidents, dents or dings, I let it get to the point of no return before my H insisted that I get a new car. I have owned my newer car for a little over a year now. Shortly after getting it, it stalled at a busy intersection while I was alone (automatic car so this wasn't my fault) and I couldn't get it started again. So little 4'10" me had to get out of the car and push it to the side of the road to get it out of the way, with no help from the rude Pennsylvania residents who decided to honk at me rather than assist me. In the process of moving it, it got a bit too much momentum and I couldn't stop it so it ended up kissing a guardrail. FAIL 1
Two weeks ago I was county bound on I-95 and just north of Waterville my fender liner decides that it wants to take off and scare the Beejeezus out of me. I had to hang out for an hour waiting for AAA to come rescue me because my knowledge of cars is little to none. After I was told that I would indeed survive and my car had no chance of blowing up I continued my trip but seriously a FENDER LINER!?? Who looses a fender liner, all of the autobody shops keep looking at me like I'm nuts because they say that it is rare for one to fall out. FAIL 2
This morning I had a dentist appointment and get back home to park my car in the garage. I have very little clearance on either side and was watching the far side of the car when CRUNCH I hit the drivers side mirror on the side of the garage. I just spent a half hour trying to glue the cracked part so that it doesn't look like anything happened. I have a box rigged underneath of the mirror to try and hold it in place while the glue is drying. H will NOT be impressed if/when he sees it, I'm hoping that my crafty skills will save me. 3 strikes and I'm a bit afraid to keep driving this car!
End of vent, I think I'm going to just go back to bed because it seems like it will be one of "those" days.
Re: Why I will never own a really nice car
What kind of car is this anyhow?!?
Sounds like that car and you have bad juju together. Good thing cars don't really retain any kind of value! Bash it away, I say!
I am definitely with you! I drove a 1992 Volvo station wagon (that I LOVED and had been in our family since it rolled off the lot) up until 2008 when Ky finally convinced me to get a new car. While I love my new-to-me rig, I'm a bit disaster prone and have already had a couple of mash-ups with it (like taking the molding off of the garage door @ my dad's), and they make me feel super guilty. Probably why I'm not allowed to drive his Infiniti...
Back to bed for the rest of the day sounds like a great idea!

Oh, no...I am not liking the sound of any of this! I've been driving a '98 Sunfire and we are just getting to the point where my father (AKA, my mechanic) is warning me that, while the car runs great, it is likely to start rusting out soon, meaning I'll be Fred Flinstone-ing it to work. I have never owned a car newer than that...my only other car was an '84 Cutless Supreme. Anyway, a customer of his has a Maxima that they bought brand new and are looking to sell and my dad is suggesting we strongly consider it...now, granted, it's still only an '03, but that's new in my book!
It's also quite sad how excited I am at the prospect...my car hasn't had air conditioning in 2 years, has manual windows and locks and ONE CUP HOLDER...all I want is a car with two cup holders
Don't be worried, I just have wicked bad luck when it comes to random things like this. I'm sure that you will have many years of good luck with whatever your next car is.
Mine isn't wicked new either, but I'm with you that I was so excited to have power locks and windows!! Also I'm thankful to no longer be inhaling exhaust fumes whenever I have to drive with the windows up. It's the little things in life.
My last car was a '92 Dodge Spirit that I owned from 1996 to 2005. It had manual windows and locks and it didn't have a trunk release inside the car so I had to get out of the car and manually unlock the trunk when passing through the checkpoint to get into a government facility in post- 9/11/01 suburban Washington, DC. That was super fun.
After I moved to Maine, I discovered the driver's window had a tendency to freeze shut so when I'd go through the toll booth to get on the Turnpike (before I got an EZPass) I would sometimes have to open my door to hand through the money. More fun!
It didn't have any built-in cupholders but I had a plastic organizer with two cupholders that sat on the floor inbetween the driver and passenger seats. As long as I didn't take any corners too fast, my cups would stay put!
When I upgraded in 2005 to a used 2004 Ford Taurus SES (the highest trim model) I felt like I was living the life of luxury!
Before you buy the Maxima, check it carefully for rust. We had to get rid of DH's '05 Altima last fall because it was rusting badly underneath. We were not happy to have only had that car for 6 years (DH bought it in 2004).
ETA: I forgot to mention the best part about the Spirit! It was "totalled" in the late '90s from a hail storm. It was mechancally sound but the surface of the car looked like a golf ball. I negotiated with the insurance company to take a reduced cash payout for the appearance and kept driving the car with liability-only insurance. I made out really well on that deal.
Ohhh, thanks for the advice, Mainely...I will casually mention this to my dad without explaining that I heard it from a gal on the internet...he's not so much tech-savvy and does not need to know about The Nest
Yes, I feel you on the trunk thing, too!
This is the craziest thing about this darn Sunfire, though...I mean, brand new it probably sold for like $14,000...I got it for $6,000 when it was 2 years old and had 30,000 miles on it and I am the only one of my friends that hasn't gotten a new(er) car since...and it's probably going to be retired for some rust. It is really a "get me from point A to point B" car and it's been fabulous! Except for the cup holder thing...
