baptism ideas

Hello,

We are going to have a party this fall to celebrate my son's baptism.  We anticipate around 15-20 people at the party, including at least 5 kids.  We are trying to have a menu that is kid-friendly as well as easy (can prepare most of it the day before or use the slow-cooker, etc).

cheese and crackers
mango/fruit salsa or bean salsa and chips
veggies and hummus/dip

bbq beef in slow cooker (with buns)
pretzel hotdogs (can be made and frozen ahead of time, then heated in oven)
marinated grilled chicken tenders (reheated in oven or serve cold)

grilled/roasted veggies (zucchini, summer squash, mushrooms, peppers?)
roasted potatoes or fancy potato salad
corn salad
baked beans

cupcakes (my sister will decorate these, she can make them really cute)
mini cheesecakes: oreo, cherry, pumpkin

Re: baptism ideas

  • I think the apps and desserts look good.  Think about your baptism, the way ours go it's 10:30 Mass, 11:45 baptism, pictures, home, in the door, pics, drinks, chaos.  It's easily 1 pm before people eat IF the food is ready to go.  That means anything needs to go in the oven at 10 and be good until 1.  Your roasted veggies sound good, but they will never sustain that length of time.  Crock pot beef, baked beans, potato salad, and corn will be fine.  You know your guests, but I rarely have a choice of more than one main.

One thought might be to add a soup.  Fall is a great time for soups and it could be an option for another main/side.  It will last in the crockpot or on the stove.  If you have enough coffee mugs, that's a cute way to serve too.

If you want to cook when you get home anyone will have now gone from 10 or earlier to well after 1 without food.  In that case you will need more apps.

  • Remember seasons: corn salad, fruit salsa, summer squash and possibly zucchini won't be available fresh.  Those are summer foods, so be sure to think about the fall, not right now.  I'm also not loving the idea of cherry and pumpkin cheesecakes right beside each other - one summer, one fall.  I'd probably just do Oreo and pumpkin.

I think you can get rid of the pretzel hotdog things - chicken and beef are plenty.

    Hi:

I've had 2 fall baptisms.  For my first son (about 20 people)  I did 2 soups, (both Ina Garten recipes) a seafood chowder and her butternut squash soup. I had a selection of  fresh bread and a green salad, fruit salad, and antipasta tray  and then cake and ice cream.  The soups were in the crock pots before church so all we had to do was pull out the salads and uncover the bread and we were ready to eat.  People really liked it and it was really low stress for me.  We have fiesta ware, so I served it in coffee mugs.  Our power went out the night before and didn't come back on until 7:30 AM and it was still pretty low stress.
