F/U on Brazilian Blowout

Just thought I would mention since I was the rain on the parade with the whole formaldehyde thing and the FDA.

I had a long chat with my hairstylist (she has been my stylist for 10 years and friend) and well...I am getting the Keratin treatment on Thursday.

It is a formaldehyde free treatment (yes we had the talk about the FDA finding brazilian blowout f-free ones to still have it in them) and that it is not a brazilian blowout and that she only does the Keratin now because of all the stuff with it.

We are going to do a patch test 24 hours ahead of time to ensure I am not allergic, and then we are gonna do it.

I promise to take pictures and let you all know how it goes and keep you updated on the process. =)

(ETA: the aldehydes are different)

Re: F/U on Brazilian Blowout

  • Cool! Take before and after photos for us??
  • I'm really interested to see too as I always consider doing it, but I want to know if it's worth it.

Also, I've love to hear about the next few months too, to see what it's like as your hair grows out and what not.

  • Will you find out what product she's using that formaldehyde free? It seems like a lot claim to be formaldehyde free but then they have things that are just like formaldehyde. I had just given up and figured that everything seems to be carcinogenic and most people don't get cancer but I still have hope that maybe there is something out there that's safer.

Also, will you have to wait 3 days to wash your hair or put it up or tuck it behind your ears? There was a keratin treatment that required this, and I knew that there was no way I could do that.

Related to things that people freakout about, the other day I broke a CFL and started cleaning it up. And then remembered they have mercury in them. Turns out you're supposed to air out the room for 15-30 minutes before cleaning it up. And then use gloves and dispose of what you used to clean it up. ***sigh*** So, of course, I totally freaked out that I had given myself mercury poisoning. And then I read that exposure to a broken CFL exposes you to as much mercury as eating like 2 pieces of tuna sashimi (which I do at least once a month, knowing it was a high mercury fish but also having had read it's OK in moderation). But instead of this making me feel better, I'm now kinda freaked out about the amount of mercury in tuna sashimi.

And then everyone in Austin uses bug treatments regularly, and I'm kinda worried about the constant exposure to these insecticides...

Sorry, this turned into a total rant.

  • I'm really interested to hear how it goes and see the results! Let me know what you think!

I did this type of keratin treatment. It did feel yucky by the 3rd day (even though I'm usually an every 3-4 day hair washer), but the results were awesome. It lasted 4 months for me and I have a pretty tight curl.

I did it on the Saturday morning of a 3 day weekend I knew I wouldn't be doing much and washed it Tuesday morning.

  • I had the keratin treatment, my brain must be mush because I forgot that I did during the last post.  Anyway, I did not think the results were all that great.  My hair seemed pretty much the same.  I still had to flat iron it.
