Anyone know about KPMG's work environment/corporate culture?

Just trying to do some research.

Re: Anyone know about KPMG's work environment/corporate culture?

  • It really depends on which side you are on, taxes, audit, etc.  I know busy season tends to be a bit crazy.  Big 4 can be tough but it is definitely worth it because so many other companies are looking to hire people with B4 experience.

  • Hi....I hardly ever post over here but I used to work at KPMG.

I started working in IT advisory right out of college and worked there for two years and left in Sept 2010.

     Pros:

good benefits and you get 5 weeks vacation.

I really liked my coworkers, but the IT advisory group is much more laid back than tax and audit (not sure what umbrella you would be going under). This included significantly less overtime (which you dont get paid for). I know many audit teams that have required saturday and sunday work days for weeks at a time.

I gained a lot of experience and was able to network a lot.

We did a lot of happy hours and fun thing together as a team.

I got to travel to Europe and Asia multiple times, as well as NYC, Chicago and other cool places.

     Cons:

Personally I felt underappreciated for the work I was putting in when looking at the big picture. I was passed up for a promotion twice and literally told that my yearly evaluation ranking was as high as it could be but they gave me a lower score due to "budget" and "upper management" constraints. This was the biggest reason for me leaving.

You are going to work long hours. Even if you are an admin....sept-jan is busy season and you will work late. I only had to sleep at the office once though and that was because some intern literally lost about 2 months worth of evidence for an audit.

Travel. Most likely you are going to have to travel a bit. My first year I traveled at least 30-40% of the time. It sucked but I earned enough points for a free vacation (hotel, air & rental car). My second year I traveled less, probably 15-20%. I know some people who love to travel and travel at least 70% of the time. If you have a family, you normally dont travel as much. I mentioned positive traveling places above;  you also travel to really crappy places. El Dorado, AK, El Paso, Blythewood, SC and you can travel by yourself which isnt always fun.

Please feel free to ask any other questions. I have a meeting until noon today so I might not be able to reply until after then.

  • i asked a friend for her input.  she works in audit at kpmg:

The culture differs significantly from office and practice line.  The office managing partner and other practice line lead partners will dictate the tone at the top.  In my experience, KPMG has a nurturing but challenging work environment.  Right now, they are revamping their performance evaluation approach, platform, and metrics with a push to take professional?s performance to ?the next level.?  I actually really enjoy the give/take balance that comes with this philosophy.  Benefits are average for the industry ? as is flexibility in schedules.  Big 4, in general, has more flexibility than traditional companies, but there are times of heavier work and longer hours.  The experience is definitely marketable.  Look for ads for your ?dream job? and see if most of those jobs ask for Big 4 experience.
