Rethinking our landscape plan - any thoughts?

We finally ripped out the gnarled bushes on the side of our property, and dug out the front weedy bed.  With all of it gone, I'm starting to rethink our landscape design to put in one (eventual) medium-sized tree instead of the planned row of dogwood shrubs.

I'm torn between wanting shade & privacy (we're on a fairly busy street) and enjoying an open view.  I know for sure I want to: demo the sidewalk/front steps and replace with informal paver path and larger wood porch; build up a brick flower bed in front (covering foundation); smaller lawn; xeriscape low-maintenance (once established) front bed by sidewalk.

Anyone feel like critiquing our plans?  We are in zone 5, on a cul-de-sac, in arid Denver.  Slope from the highest point to driveway is approx 15" (over 25' distance) and down 23" to sidewalk.

The plan is big and too difficult for me to read, but if it comes down to more shade or more sun:

Shadier gardens suffer less insect damage and are more environmentally efficient (specifically water efficient, since this is one of your criteria).
