I know some of you ladies sort of live in that area, so I was wondering what you knew of Dedham? DH and I are just getting into the very beginning stages of house shopping and we can't seem to find the right town for us.
A little background... DH works at a big CPA firm in downtown Boston (probably will until he retires), and I'm a new-ish real estate agent based out of Newton, but my job has me all over. My family lives down in the Providence area and DH's family is in Waltham. I want to find a place that won't have a terrible commute for him (he definitely has to drive in ~6 months out of the year for busy season. Since the hours are so unpredictable, it's hard for him to rely on public transit). I also don't want to have a terrible drive to Prov, especially once we have kids.
We won't have a half million to sink into our first house, since we want to try to get pregnant once we buy (thus living on one salary), so we do want three bedrooms (so, I'm really thinking that anything within the 128 belt is probably out of the question for now).
Thus, I was sort of thinking Dedham. I was wondering if any of you know what a daily commute to Boston would be like? He would probably avoid 93 and do 95 to 90 or try tic-tacking through Newton to the Pike, or back roads through Brookline.
Any advice? Other ideas? I feel like this is a sticking point for us and I don't really know where else to look.
Thanks in advance!!! ![]()

Re: Dedham question
Dedham has a good school system and you could easily drive down Dedham St. to newton. Dedham to boston commute and back all depends on the time of day. For exp. Rt. 1 sucks at 4-5 p.m. Not sure about the R.I. commute. Overall, the town has a good reputation.
I don't know much about Dedham schools, but it is certainly has a bit more of a city vibe to it than most of the other towns around it (like Norwood is more town-y suburban, KWIM?)
The commute shouldn't be terrible... Well, any more terrible than any one else's commute into Boston LOL. But I'm biased because I drove into Boston every day for 4 years from a town 20 minutes south of Dedham and I never found the commute terrible. Maybe I have a lot of patience when it comes to commuting haha
We live in Canton and enjoy it, I feel like we are close to everything that we need. I shop at legacy place in Dedham all the time, I don't know much about the town of Dedham, but the little theatre is cute, and my friend is a 2nd grade teacher there and says the schools are decent.
The traffic can be killer, I hate that its so unpredictable and it can take me an hour sometimes to get to Natick, Southie, Cambridge... In the height of rush hour it can take 1 hour+. I meet my SIL on rte 9 for coffee sometimes and if I leave at 4 pm it will take me an hour or more to get home, its only 20 miles...
Hi! I just moved to Dedham from Maine a little over a month ago, and so far I love it! I had a similiar problem as you on whereabouts we should live and I am so glad we settled on Dedham. I live within walking distance from the commuter rail and I've only driven once or twice into Boston during rush hour, so I can't speak too much about the traffic. However, even though Dedham isn't the most direct town to the city, it does have a lot of different options, which I like. You can take 95 up to 90 or 128 to 93, or take Washington Street directly into the city depending on how bad traffic looks in the morning. Going backroads can get a little sticky through JP, but once you get closer to Boston, it actually get's easier.
I really like Dedham-- There's a lot really closeby and everything is pretty easy to get too! You also might like Needham or Norwood, and if you want to go a little further (you might get a little more bang) maybe Walpole too. The good thing about these towns is that there all of 95 which is also where Waltham and RI is off of too, and it only takes about 5-10 mins to get connected to 93.
Best of luck!
