iPhone water damage question : (

My iPhone 4 was in my gym bag and my entire bottle of water somehow spilled in my bag (on my wallet, book, keys, evetything).  I immediately dried it off as well as I could and removed the fancy cover I have on it, and turned the phone off (I was thinking this might help it dry out...?)

So, it's working fine, but a screen keeps popping up and saying "this device is not compatible with the iPhone", when nothing is plugged in.

My friends think this is water damage and told me to put it in a bowl of rice and that the rice will "draw the moisture out".  I've had it sitting in rice for about an hour and it's still popping up with that wierd screen.

Any ideas?  I just got my new phone about 7 weeks ago Sad

  • It takes a while to do the rice bag trick. Some Apple Stores rock and will replace your iPhone for you. I had one do it when my H's iPhone was dropped in an Otter Box and the screen shattered.

  • Leave it in a bag of rice for a week (turned off). Do NOT keep turning it on and off.

I dropped my old one (3g) in the toilet at work. I did the rice trick and sure enough, I got my phone to work. I was lucky enough that this incident happened just as the 4 was coming out and I was eligible for an upgrade. So, I got the 4 and still have the 3 as a back up.

Yeah, or at least SEVERAL days.  It will not draw the water out after an hour.  And definitely don't keep turning it on and off, you're going to make any problems worse.

  • Thanks for the responses ladies!

I left it in rice overnight and turned it on this morning and looked at it for about 20 minutes (before I checked the nest, lol) and the warning screen hadn't popped up at all.  However, I did just turn it off again and will let it sit in rice today also.
