broccoli problems

I'm wondering if I'm going to get any  broccoli this year. The plants are huge, but no signs of any the heads. This is my first time growing it. Is this normal for PA? I read that it doesn't like heat and although its fairly cool this weekend, I'm worried that its too late in the season and nothing is going to happen.

Are other people already harvesting or done already?

I do broccoli as a fall crop. I pulled my broccoli plants out of the garden some time in March.

I grew broccoli this spring but pulled it up a few weeks ago because the heads were getting smaller and smaller and flowering quickly. I figured it was too hot.
  • I too pulled my broccoli out a long time ago, but mine got big first and then heads formed. When it got too hot the heads started flowering
  • OP, I'm having the exact same problem as you.  I'm just going to hold out and see if they do anything.

  • I'm in PA and we have 1 tiny little head on only 1 of our huge plants. It's just been so hot. Mine hasn't bolted yet, so we're letting them go but I don't think this is the year for broccoli around here.

Ok, good to know. It definitely hasn't bolted yet, so I guess I'll keep waiting. I don't really need the space for anything else at the moment.

  • You can eat the leaves, so at least you're getting something from the plant. Ours were starting to shade my brussels sprouts so we cut the leaves starting from the bottom and cooked them like kale. They're bitter, but pretty good.
