Is there an opposite of a lactation cookie?

I'm kind of kidding, but I do need to dry myself up and it if necessitated eating large amts of sweets that would just be an added bonus!

I stopped feeding Ingrid a couple of days ago (been weaning for wks, so I just dropped one last feeding). At first I was fine, but then last night I started getting full and woke up this am totally engorged and hurting.  It is really hard for me to hold Ingrid right now b/c my boobs hurt so much.

What is the right thing to do?  Just suck it up and get through the pain? I can do this (I think) so long as it doesn't lead to a clogged duct/mastitis, which I really want to avoid.  I'm afraid if I nurse her a little to release the pressure it will just encourage my body to make more milk and I want to turn it off.

I know about cabbage leaves for pain, but I really just want to try something that will help to dry up the milk.  Any ideas?  My friend suggested antihistamine, but I already take it every night to sleep and I really don't want to snow myself during the day (it works really well to make me tired).

  • Cabbage leaves get stinky but they do also dry up the milk if you crush them a bit and then put them in your bra.

You can also take an antihistamine which dries pretty much everything.

Sage is also supposed to help but doesn't taste very good. Sage cookies?  hmm maybe not.  lol

  • I took sudafed and then Tylenol for the pain. I would also hand express just enough so I wouldn't leak.

  • I had a really tough time weaning from Brody as far as pain/engorgement too and ended up getting mastitis. For me it helped to pump a TINY bit like less than an ounce just to relieve the excruciating pain. I pumped once or twice a day (1 oz each time) for maybe 3-4 days and then was able to dry up completely. Good luck to you- I hope you feel better quickly!

  • I had an awful time with that after having James.  And being allergic to sulfa meant I couldn't do the cabbage leaves which is what people swear by.  I ended up doing 3 days of sudafed every 4 (or however many hours the box says) hours and taking Sage capsules that mrstice found for me.  I am pretty sure the pain from trying to stop milk production was worse than the c-section itself...I don't envy you AT ALL!  Oh there is also a tea that helped, I have the box at home.  If I remember correctly mrstice got it all at Campbells for me.  Hope that helps!  GL!
