My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding

Okay, I have totally found my new guilty pleasure: My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.  I had not watched any of the episodes of this show until today, but my best friend is wildly addicted to it.  There's a marathon on right now and wow.  I'm addicted.

This show is wild!  I cannot imagine getting engaged at 14 to be married at 16!  And those dresses?  Wow.  I've always loved learning about other cultures, and this show just fascinates me.

Anybody else seen this show?  Thoughts?

  • I've never even heard of it. But we don't have cable :( What channel is it on? Maybe I can stream it online! It sounds interesting.

  • I agree with you.  The show is like watching a train wreck. It is simply fascinating.  I would love to know how they get their money.  I think they said one groom was in construction or hauling or something.  They dress like a bunch of hoochies and I don't understand how they think that their life is a good life.

  • OMG! Totally addicted to this show! I've been watching the marathon too. :-) It is a VERY interesting culture to say the least!

  • Before our weddings last year, one of the boards was exploding with the posts on those weddings. There is a site mocking horrible wedding dresses and ideas, and the gypsy weddings were filling most of the pages. I cannot find the link to it anymore.

On that site last year, I read that this one girl was married at 16, her dress had to be carried by 2people, because it was so heavy, it weighed over 100lbs and cost over $100K. Her father took out a loan or sold his trailer (don't remember right now) to pay for her dress and to buy her a trailer as a gift.

Coming from Poland, I am pretty familiar with the Gypsy culture.  Though really fascinating to look at, if you are totally new to it, it's really shocking and sad, when you get to know it.  Weddings may be the most "glamorous" days in these people's lives.  Most European nations do not like to have Gypsies move in - they are a traveling tribe mostly from Romania and very often petty crime rates go up simultaneously with their move to the area.

  • I have to check this out!
  • I don't pretend to fully understand other cultures, so this show is quite fascinating.  I find it wild that the girls wear revealing clothes but are expected to remain virgins until marriage.  One episode featured one of the dressmakers of the gypsy wedding gowns and she said the culture is very strict when it comes to morals and tradition male/female roles.
